Remote Controls

Post by WharfRat » Sun Apr 20, 2014 8:31 am

I am starting a new topic for all the remote controls that do and do not work with EventGhost.

This is an important topic, which I may eventually have to hand over to one of the admins to continue.
Therefore, I have created a new identity for myself, which I will surrender.

So, for now, WharfRat is ControlFreak.

Part I : Introduction

This topic is about remote controls for EventGhost.

Its purpose is to serve as a resource.
From this, we can coherently update the list of supported remote controls on the EventGhost Web site pages and the distributed documentation.

It is also a place where you can ask questions about unknown remote controls.

Only the essentials are discussed here. Everything else should be directed to the forum topics for each particular remote and/or plugin.

The topic is structured as follows:
  • Part I : Introduction
    Part II : Explanation
    Part III : Reference codes
Part IV : Remotes that work with EventGhost
Part V : Remotes that do not work with EventGhost
    Part VI : Plugins
Part VII : Installing a Remote Control
Part VIII : Unknown Remote Controls
    Part IX : Useful links
    remote 0001
    remote 0002
    etc.
and then queries and responses and comments and more remotes
    etc.
Hopefully, it also serves as a challenge to increase the population of Part IV, and decrease the population of Part V.

After much reorganization, to simplify things, this topic now also has two supplementary topics: Remote Control Plugins and Remote Control Diagnostics.

Part II : Explanation

Let us refer to the handheld part of a remote control as the transmitter.
Let us refer to the computer interface part of a remote control as the receiver.
DIY (Do It Yourself) refers to a handmade device.

The details for each remote control follows a consistent format.

remote code: the reference code for this remote
  • see Part III
this is the preferred way to refer to this remote
works: yes or no
  • yes is if the remote works with EventGhost
no is if the remote does not work with EventGhost
name: the common way to refer to this remote
  • this usually refers to the brand and model by which it is usually known
    see also alternate names
a picture, if there is one, preferably including both the transmitter and the receiver

Vendor ID: hexadecimal value of the Plug-and-Play ID of the manufacturer
Product ID: hexadecimal value of the Plug-and-Play ID of the item

alternate names: other common names by which this particular remote is known

variations: links to slight variations of this particular remote
  • these refer to this particular brand and model of the remote
equivalent remotes: links to other brands of this particular remote

OEM: (Original Equipment Manufacturer) the company which makes this remote, and the other brands and variations of it

type: what the remote consists of
  • remote control is the transmitter plus the receiver
remote receiver is just the receiver only
remote transmitter is just the transmitter only
medium: how the remote communicates (IR or RF)
  • IR is Infrared, commonly called CIR (Consumer InfraRed), which is definitely not the same as IRDA
RF is radio frequencies, which can be further classified as Bluetooth, 2.4GHz, or whatever, if it is known
interface: how the remote is connected to the computer (USB, serial port, LAN, or whatever)

universal receiver: does the receiver work with any transmitter
can blast: does the receiver also transmit to other devices (TV, HiFi, etc.)
can learn: does the receiver also record transmissions from other transmitters

plugin: which plugins will work with this remote

requirements: what other hardware is needed for this remote
  • each plugin may have additional requirements
please refer to the plugins as well
WWW: website for the remote
  • this is not the EventGhost forum topic for the remote
refer to the plugins for the EventGhost forum topics
notes: whatever else may prove to be useful

verified: have my assumptions been checked by someone who knows more about the remote than me
  • do not assume that everything is correct until it has been verified
If a remote does not work with EventGhost, then plugins and requirements are usually omitted.
Additionally, the notes will also serve as a reminder that the remote does not work with EventGhost.

HELP! Everyone needs to get involved in this topic.
Check the details of your remote.
I only have a 0022 using RP-0020.
We need to get everything verified.

Part III : Reference codes

In order to impose some order on what could become a chaotic topic, we will use various kinds of reference codes.

remote codes:
Remotes that do, or do not, work with EventGhost will receive a 4 digit numeric remote code.
For example: 0001, 0002, 0003, etc.
ControlFreak will assign that number, because no one else can edit Part IV or Part V.
(next available remote code: 0058)

query codes:
If you have a query about an unknown remote, you should use a 4 letter alphabetic (upper case A to Z) query code.
For example: AAAA, AAAB, AAAC, etc.
Just look for the latest query code in the most recent posting, and increment it to the next letter.
Of course, responses and general comments do not have codes, but will usually refer to remote codes and query codes.
Images of a remote should be a maximum of 400 pixels wide and 300 pixels high, preferably with both the transmitter and the receiver.
Before you decide to make a query, please take the time to read all of the postings in this topic.
That is, look for an existing query code first.
Some example queries are given later.

plugin codes:
EventGhost has four different types of plugins: Remote Receiver, Program Control, External Equipment, Other
(the plugin types can simply be abbreviated as RP, PP, EP, OP)
We will use RP- and a four digit number to designate remote plugin reference codes.
For example: RP-0001, RP-0002, RP-0003, etc.
ControlFreak will assign that number, because no one else can edit Part VI.
(next available remote plugin code: RP-0042)

Part VII : Installing a Remote Control

There are no universal methods of installing a remote control.
But here are some guidelines which may prove useful.

Unplug the receiver if it is already plugged in.
Close EventGhost.

Check the hardware requirements for the remote control in this topic.
Check the software requirements for the remote control in the Remote Control Plugins topic.
Some remote control plugins require WinUSB.
Check the forum topic for the particular remote control plugin for additional instructions as well.

Make sure all the requirements are met, and follow any suggested installation instructions.

If there are no recommended instructions, then proceed as follows:
Plug in the receiver.
If the Found New Harware Wizard starts up, then install the software automatically.
You might also want to install WinUSB manually now, if it is needed by the plugin.
Restart EventGhost.
Add the remote control plugin to the EventGhost Configuration tree.
A dialog will appear for installing the proper driver, click Yes.
Continue with all the remaining steps to install the driver.
Uncheck Log only assigned and activated events.
Press some buttons on the remote to see if any events show up in the EventGhost Log pane.

Part VIII : Unknown Remote Controls

If you already have the remote, then there are some things you can do that will help us all.

Do not try to get the remote working with EventGhost yet.
Close EventGhost.
Do not plug in the receiver yet, or unplug it if it is already plugged in.

Perform Procedure 01 and submit the results to this topic.
