I deleted C:\ProgramData\CMUV\DVBViewer\channels.dat and channels.bak (even the two favourite files), did a rescan, deleted the channel with funny characters. Restarted DVBViewer and EG between each phase ...

The plugin obviously fails to initialize the COM interface provided by DVBViewer.
Did you already try to reinstall DVBViewer? Maybe DVBViewer's COM registration is somehow corrupted.
If that doesn't help: Does 'DVBViewer Spy' (another program using the COM interface, downloadable in members area ...

I tried reinstalling DVBViewer but it didn't help. Will try DVBViewer Spy next time I get to the PC where I have the DVBViewer site password stored.
I disabled a couple unnecessary Windows services earlier while trying to squeeze all out of the CPU. Not sure if that could ...
