I'd recommend you to use the new action "Get Audio Device By Name"; it returns the ID and name of a device that name matches a pattern and it returns None if no device matches the string. So if it's not None, it is ready.
It will be good option if the original idea will not work.

Perhaps, it will be the beter solution - allow the user to choose preferred icon? (just click "browse" and to choose *.ico file)
It could be also stored in a profile, so when you open a profile (with specified icon) - application icon (in title bar, in tray and all other places) automatically would ...

Maybe You should change color and icon for debug messages in future releases..?
