How to setup W7 to recognise other remotes (Now Working)

Hello everyone,

I really have searched and searched for weeks and not been able to sort this, my problem is setting up my built in IR receiver to accept other remotes.

I use a Philips Pronto TSU9600 so I'm able to install pretty much any IR databases, so far I've installed X10 and a few others but my PC refuses to acknowledge any commands from these.

I've read somewhere that I need to alter the registry to allow the IR reciever to accept commands from other than Media Centre official remote but I cant find any information anywhere.

Am I missing something very simple as I just cant find any way to alter this setting.

Help would be very much appreciated for a newbe.

What is the built in RF receiver meant for? Is it for a wireless keyboard, mouse, or remote, or are you talking about Bluetooth or wireless LAN, since that is also RF technology. The wireless keyboard/mouse/remote RF recievers usually only work with the devices that they are manufactured for. That kind of RF is usually referred to as 2.4GHz RF. Bluetooth will work with a wider range of devices.

X10 remotes usually use RF, I think, since I don't use X10. The Pronto's only transmit IR codes, I think, since I don't have any Philips Prontos or Logitech Harmonys. I do have brochures with specs about the Prontos here, including your TSU9600 (the TSU9600/37).

Does the Acer have a built in IR receiver? IRDA does not do remote control, but if it does have some other kind of IR receiver, then it would probably conform to the Microsoft MCE receiver, in which case you should use the MCE codes on the Pronto.

Does EventGhost play a role in any of this, or are you only concerned with Windows at the moment.

Has a lot to do with eventghost as I'm fast running out of available Media Centre codes and need some alternative codes to set up various actions such as , opening my video folder, opening music files and so on. My PC is hd'd to the TV so using command buttons designed on the Pronto to action stuff.

Just thought with having the relevant plugins I would then be able to use other remote libraries to set events.

The IR receiver is built into the PC and accepts commands from the supplied media centre remote control.

Thought there would be a way to tell my PC via registry hack to also accept commands from other remotes.

Install this plugin:

You'll need to scan through that thread because there are newer versions than what is attached to the first post. After you install the newest one, configure the plugin and click the button to install the service.

Reboot.

Now, The Media Center IR receiver will trigger events in EG for practically any remote. However, it will also cause the remote to no longer work in Media Center without doing an extra step.

There are two options here, depending on how you would like the remote to work.

1) If you want the Media Center remote to work as it did before AND get events in EG from practically any remote, install the registry patch found here:

And Reboot!

2) If you DO NOT want the Media Center remote to work as it did before, but you ONLY want events in EG from practically any remote... then you are done and do not need to install the registry patch above. If you want to get commands to work in Media Center at this point, there IS another plugin you can install to do that... but option 1 above is much easier.

I hope that makes sense.

That's interesting to know, I was totally unaware of it.

Your'e right, it was what tjpearson was asking for. I was going to suggest the Keene InfraRed Anywhere (KIRA) or USB-IRT receivers.

Yes, the Media Center IR transceiver can do almost everything that the USB-UIRT does, and costs much less. And... if you don't need it to function as a blaster, you can find Media Center IR receivers even cheaper.

Well with help from members here I'm pleased to say all is working bang on, my PC recognises loads of 3rd party remote codes loaded into my Pronto TSU9600.

My wife won't be seeing me for weeks now I know I've got plenty of options to set up EvenGhost just how I like it.

For others that may also have been having this issue:
Download the zip file from this link viewtopic.php?f=9&t=6044
Extract and run 'AlternateMceIrInstaller_x64 or AlternateMceIrInstaller_x86' for whatever your system is
Restart your PC if prompted
Open EventGhost and find the 'Microsoft MCE Remote - Vista/Win7' plugin
Double click the plugin and click button 'Install Service'

Done, I've been wrestling with this for weeks but all works fantastic now.

FWIW, this gets run automatically when you install the plugin in EG, as you described, so one less step for others.
