Launch an Application from Remote Control using EG

Post by vogelap »

Though I have been a member of this forum since 2010, I am brand-new to EventGhost...

I read that it could be configured to allow me to press a button (the Red button) on my remote (a Harmony 650) to launch an application on my PC (Windows 10). The application is Plex Home Theater.

I do not have the foggiest idea of even how to start with EventGhost. If someone could give me a little nudge, I can sort it out!

All help appreciated! Happy holidays.

So the first thing is you need a way for the harmony remote (or any remote) to communicate with your PC. You can do that using FLIRC or a CEC adapter. Once you have either of those adapters, you can find the right EG plugin to map a remote button to start any app on your PC. EG has an action to start any app which will be mapped to your remote button. Look into FLIRC or CEC. I prefer CEC because it doesn't require line of sight but I believe FLIRC is cheaper and easier to setup

Thank you for your reply! I really appreciate it.

I'm currently able to control PLEX on my PC from the remote... Do I need additional "control" provided by FLIRC or CEC, or does the Logitech 650 Remote's USB dongle provide enough control?

I DO have a FLIRC! I hope I can find it -- we moved recently. Once I hook that up, what's the next step to getting it recognized by EG?

P.S. I am not familiar with CEC... Is it this? https://www.pulse-eight.com/p/104/usb-hdmi-cec-adapter

How are you controlling plex? Are you using an IR usb receiver? I imagine if you are controlling plex already using your remote then you do not need additional hardware.

I have the Logitech 650 but I am not certain I am using their USB dongle... I have a Logitech K400r wireless keyboard/mouse which came with a small Logitech-branded USB and I've got another (unlogoed) USB receiver that I cannot recall where it comes from.

In other news, I found my FLIRC and was able to update it (from firmware 1.0 to 3.6!) and installed the newest software for it too.

Now, just need to figure out how to get EG to recognize when I press the RED button on the remote...

I have a logitech 700 which is similar to the 650 but Im not sure those come with a usb dongle. Either way, you may already be sending via CEC or Infrared. If you have an AMD apu, i believe those already support CEC.
You should try to use either of the two pluggins...

the first one is a plugin for CEC and the second one is a plugin for IR. Once the plugins are set, they should recognize the input from your remote which can then be mapped

It doesn't appear that my PC is "seeing" when I press, for example, the RED or YELLOW button on the remote... I see no record in EG's log about the action... Or am I doing something wrong?

Does that mean that the receiver isn't the "ideal" one?

What are known-compatible USB receivers that would work with EventGhost as well as the Harmony 650?

Is that the next thing to explore?
