Re: OS permission denied error
do me a favor, go into your device manager and see if there is a device listed as unknown it should be the USBCIR if the problem you are having might be related to a problem i just found a fix for.
and if you do see the USBCIR listed as unknown.
delete the device (uninstall) from device manager.
reboot the computer. as the computer is coming back up start pressing any button on the remote and don't stop until you hear a couple of device added chimes, like 3 or 4 of them.
if you hear even one device uninstalled chime good possibility you may have to do it again.
this is only if and only is the USBCIR is listed as unknown.
now next topic.
you said something about rings??? in the photos of the device there are no rings
the actual eye is what you want to see blinking by using the preview of a digital camera or a cell phone (you have to turn down the mega pixel all the way)
look at it with the camera as you fire a command you should see the eye blink. and remember the eye is directional so look at the side that you would have stuck to the tv or AVR
it's very fast when it blinks, it's actually going to look like it lights up sometimes they may flicker a little but on average no more than 100ms, so you have to pay attention (and i don't think an iPhone will work for this)

Re: OS permission denied error
I don't have a USBCIR under my device manager. I do have this listed under keyboards
Microsoft eHome MCIR 109 Keyboard
Microsoft eHome MICIR Keyboard
Microsoft eHome Remote Control keyboard Keys
To clarify, there are two separate input devices. The point and click remote is a dell xps m2010 replacement remote for that laptop. Here is a link to a discussion about the remote that led me to purchase it. A summary of the discussion is the dell remote is rebranded Gyration remote that uses a unique receiver. The remote will only work with the dell reciver, and not the gyration variation. The remote uses RF to send commands to the PC, and it works without the IR receiver even plugged into the computer. All that is required is the usb receiver.
http://www.avsforum.com/forum/26-home-t ... emote.html
In addition to the gyration, I have a Microsoft Windows XP MCE keyboard, which is listed under the device manager. Here is a link to that.
http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Remote- ... e+keyboard
When I say rings, I mean the black rings around the end of the IR cable plug. I can see them in the picture. I am guessing these rings separate each circuit within the cable.
I did the camera trick on my factory TV remote, and I can see it blink.

Re: OS permission denied error
I really don't see a ring I see an eye with a wire attached to a headphone jack
Take a photo of what you have going on over there
Maybe there is more than one blaster on the cable??
The plastic end has one flat side usually the other is curved
Flat side is what gets stuck directly on top of the ir sensor on the tv or avr
Usually have the wire head off the piece of equipment in the shortest possible direction
Here is a close up of one I don't know about this ring thing lol
Idk I really need to see what you have going on
Sorry I haven't been quick to respond the past couple days been hard at work and my internet has been up and down I am doing some upgrades

Here is a picture of my IR Transceiver. I have both cables plugged into the back of it.

Re: OS permission denied error
Those wires go straight from that transceiver to the TV, and Stereo Respectively. The Transceiver itself plugs into the PC VIA USB. I can take pictures of the back panels of the TV, and Stereo if that is what your looking for

Re: OS permission denied error
I am trying to get an understanding of what that device is plugged into???
it sounds as tho it's not a blaster if it's plugged into the back of the TV
if it was a blaster it would have one of those ir transmitters like i showed you in the picture.
so if you could take a picture of how the thing is attached to your TV it might help clarify exactly what that thing is.
LOL

Re: OS permission denied error
That is exactly what is going on, both cables are plugged directly into the back of the IR receiver. Ive attached two pictures. One of them shows the back of the stereo panel with a circle around the cable coming from the IR transceiver. The circled cable goes directly from the stereo to the IR transceiver. The other is a picture of the back of the TV. It is hard to spot exactly which cable is which but I posted that picture anyway to give you the idea that the IR transceiver is connected to the TV in the same manner as the stereo

Re: OS permission denied error
and did you say it works this way with something else controlling the transceiver????
because it shouldn't i mean, i don't know much about that dell thingie but that setup is incorrect, that dell part is supposed to come with an irblaster as i showed you in the picture, and that blaster then sticks to the front of the device where the ir eye is (the ir receiver for the device usually is a small circle on the front)
what you are plugged into are serial data ports that are intended for control from same mfg devices
example: yamaha AVR and yamaha cd player, but you want one remote then you would connect the 2 via that connection
that port is not for ir pulses there is a series of commands and responses that travel down it.
that would be a good reason as to why it's not working
now because you see the light blinking on the dell piece it means that the dell part is receiving the command even tho you are getting that traceback error, so what we need to do is come up with a means to catch that error so it won't show in the log file.
but that being said we still don't know if it is even blasting properly and we won't know that until you get the proper blaster cable for the unit
i can tell ya how to make one very easily until you order one and get it in but will require a couple parts, they can be gotten at any local radio shack
ir led (you can use a uv-b led if that's all they have)
220 ohm resistors
and a mono headphone jack (1/8")
electrical tape
unless you have a soldering iron and some shrink tubing
i made my own for any devices that i have that i had to control via ir but i opened the device and rand the ir led inside of it and placed the led right on top of (essentially) the ir receiver in the unit.
i didn't want to have anything stuck to the front of my devices and what i did when i had the availability instead of the above method.
i built a little "amplifier" for the led since the duty cycle is low on the ir led you can over drive them without burning them out, and that gave me an effective range of more like 30 feet, that way i could just add a 5v adapter to drive the led and run a cable to it and put the led where it could be hidden
you can purchase said ir transmitters with the amp already done up for about 10 dollars, you would have to order it. i know that sparkfun has one and then just add the 5 volt adapter (low amp one something like a cell phone charger that's usb
and presto nothing stuck to the front of the device. now you can get crafty, if you have a mirror on the opposite wall as the equipment, you can keep that blaster with amp close to the receiver and point it across the room. and it will bounce back and hit the device.
the above method doesn't work so well if you have devices of the same mfg and use the same codes
there is always a kink in every good solution
LOL

Re: OS permission denied error
Jriver learns IR blasts with this exact setup. The MCE EG plugin learns IR Pronto codes with this setup. This is the only way I have ever configured it, and it has always worked, and I use it regularly to teach Jriver new IR blasts. So what I do is tell jriver I want it to learn a new code, hold the remote really close to the transceiver and press the button I want JR to learn. IT stores that code, and then in a separate menu, I assign a button press on the RF remote to a learned IR blast. My only kink right now is that when EG executes a learned blasts, these new blasts do nothing. The TV is huge, and taking it apart isn't really a matter of just setting it on the ground, and removing a few screws. It weighs almost 200 LBS. Is there another EG plugin that might do this. You mentioned serial communications in an earlier post, I'm guessing this is how my TV, and Stereo are getting their turn off and on commands.

Re: OS permission denied error
no you don't have to take it apart.
and jriver is what is sending the blasts?
i wonder... try closing jriver and just use eventghost make sure there is no background service running for jriver.
i wonder if that may be holding control in some way.
it's hard because i don't have the setup that you do, and you aren't using a traditional blaster with an IRLed.
i don't know if jriver has some kind of special support for that blaster and has the means to communicate with devices through their external control port.
i am going to go and look at jriver some more to see what i can find how you have it hooked up is very odd. didn't know you could attach like that. (always wondered)

Re: OS permission denied error
even the jriver remote setup states the IR LED attached to the wire, so it's not doing anything special either.
and every reference to that receiver shows pictures of the blaster cable with the ir LED on the end.
i don't know how it's working with the say you have it connected (again i have never tried) but we really don't have a means to check and make sure it's functioning properly without having that LED attached
i wish i could help you more, as i do not understand how it's working with the way you have it connected.
did you get the blaster LED with the receiver when you purchased it?

Re: OS permission denied error
No, its the only thing that didnt come with it
Re: OS permission denied error
I've been thinking of other ways to accomplish this, and I came up with a solution but something isn't right. My gyration RF MCE remote does not work off of the MCE plugin, and instead runs off of the generic HID plugin. I use the Generic HID plugin for my green button on the gyration remote for two functions within event ghost already. If I press the green button once, then it emulates my pressing the Win key, and if I press it twice within two seconds, it emulates Win+Tab so that I can quickly switch between windows. My line of thinking is this
Because I can use jriver to customize which button presses execute learned IR blasts, I assign any random keyboard key to function as a power on button. I chose F1
I then program event ghost to emulate the F1 keystroke when I execute my desired action. In my case it is hold the green button down for 3.5 seconds. So, I hold the green button down for some time, event ghost sees me hold down my green button for 3.5 seconds, and it jumps to the emulate keystroke F1 macro. This is exactly what I have setup however, the emulate keystroke plugin is not triggering my desired macro. When I press F1 on my keyboard, It switches power on my stereo and keyboard just like I want it to. I have at my disposal a Bluetooth keyboard, and the MCE keyboard mentioned earlier. Are here any other plugins I can use to emulate keystrokes?

Re: OS permission denied error
I have done some research on that remote
Apparently it is what I would hybrid I guess
It's both vista+ mce remote and xp mce remote at the same time
Xp mce works on key shortcuts and the vista and newer doesn't
I think hard to follow other forums when I don't have the device myself to see what is going on
The only way for me to see what's going on at this point would be to do an rdp session so I can look at your setup
Because the receiver shouldn't work right the way you have it plugged in
But somehow it does could be your devices also read ir raw through those ports as well
What I want to try is getting an actual pronto code for ya one that isn't learned I know it took me a whole lot of times of trying to get the code learned for my Samsung but that's probably one of the hardest codes to get right I don't know how your devices are
Let me go and get the code and you can test it
I am assuming that the light on the receiver lights up when you send the code
I am also assuming you have used the test feature of the vista mce remote plugin to check and see if the receiver is showing as a blaster and that it's plugged in
Also you have to run eg as administrator to install the service
And after install ya have to reboot to set the registry changes
I really do want to figure out that permissions problem but I cannot replicate it without the usb redirection working I will try my raspberry pi with virtual here to redirect the usb from the pi
