Plugin to listen for new hosts

I'm looking for an event ghost plugin that can generate a log event when something connects to my network. I realize connections are made at the router but I am thinking I saw something on the forum where someone installed a freeware IDS, and used that to trigger events. I don't need anything elaborate, I just need eventghost to see a new host on my network, such as a cell phone or the ability to see when my xbox one fires up, and generates some kind of traffic. I plan to use this for tasker integration, and I don't want to use a third party server or open any ports on my router. Thanks.

Please look at the Nmap plugin, it can do exactly that and much more

if the device has a static IP then the ping plugin would work as well

Thanks for the help. I will have to test out running NMAP on my server, and see how it effects performance. I use the server to view media as well so I don't want to slow it down too much. Reading through the NMAP plugin thread, I am wondering how much querying for new devices often enough to give me nearly instant discovery will also slow down my network. The ping plugin seems like it might take less resources but I'm not sure. Any thoughts are welcomed, and thanks one more time for the advice.
