Your commitment is great and highly appreciated,

Myself, I am more into automation & monitoring stuff and sometimes other type of usage,,,not using EG as HTPC / XBMC /remote control at all actually.

Nevertheless, I do believe many others do

Just recently what I have worked on is a plugin that connects to your home security system, 1-wire integration, MQTT (Internet of things), Z-Wave, etc, that kind of things

Currently thinking of how I eventually could monitor my heat pump...

Just wanted to encourage you, reason for no other replies yet could be that here in Europe, this week is a popular winter holiday in many countries

I tend to agree with you that Eventghost shouldn't do everything. "If you only have a hammer, then everything looks like a nail". One system should be in charge of home security, another home automation, and so on. I was not familiar with MQTT but a quick Google makes it seem quite interesting. Reminds me of Jini.

As for 1-wire, thats something I know of. I used to devour a European electronics magazine called Elektor. It was one of my favorites. Things like I2C, CAN, OBD, DMX512 and JTAG are familiar to me. Soldering irons and oscilloscopes are not strangers, although I'm not an expert. I almost wired up the IR sensor from my PC-TV card (a cr*ppy Lifeview: we still use analog PAL here) to communicate with EventGhost, but opted for the PHX01RN instead. I might build an IR transmitter later to send commands via WinLIRC, but it's a struggle to get parts here.

In a similar vein - for your heat pump - in Elektor they once talked about OpenTherm (I think it was called that) as a way of communicating with home heating systems and so on. Don't know if anybody implemented it on their stuff however. We don't worry so much about heating our homes on the dark continent. So much stuff (CEBus, Lonworks) has fallen by the side of the road...
