Sorry, but hardware support for "MCE Remotes" is difficult. The problem is that while different hardware is labelled as MCE, it doesn't necessarily use the USB device id that my service expects. Some hardware simply has custom hardware that mimics the MCE functionality. That's why it is difficult to offer suggestions - I don't have the same hardware. Sorry bout that.

I have to run it as administrator anyway just to get it to save in Win 7.
The old plugin doesn't work unless you run as administrator and turn off UAC. No problem if you don't mind, but not everyone is comfortable using software that requires disabling windows security measures....

I'm running EG as Admin but I have not disabled UAC and the old plugin is working.

Thanks for the response. To be more specific, since you mentioned that hardware support for "MCE Remotes" is difficult, I'm using a Harmony 880 which is emulating an MCE Remote. The USB-UIRT receives these codes and EG picks them up no problem. These exact same codes are being sent to the Matrix Orbital IR receiver, but EG is not picking them up. It would seem to be that the Matrix Orbital's IR receiver is the issue, rather than the remote.

Is there any additional info I could provide to try and get this working or is this particular IR receiver a lost cause?

Lucky you. I don't think it works for anyone else that way.

You're right. It is the receiver, not the remote, that is the issue. Some of these devices show up as COM channels, some as HID, some as MCE USB devices. It would be cool if there was an easy way to tell what category a devices falls under and help find a plugin that way, but it isn't that easy right now.

Luck doesn't seem a very likely explanation, but I don't have a better one.

Fair enough. I know that when windows installs the "standard device", it is given elevated status. That's why you need the admin rights and UAC turned off. It sounds like your device, for whatever reason, does not have the elevated status.

Any chance you'll be able to fix the crashes that I experience (previous page) that seem to be due to the long unknown remote events (buffer too small maybe?)?

Thanks

First of all thank Stottle for this excellent plugin.

IÔÇÖve read all posts since page 13, first I went into problem like most pplz and finally got it resolve by following the setup instruction on page 14 by Stottle to uninstall original MCE remote plugin. My receiver works as expected now.

I then move on to the IR blaster function and follow StottleÔÇÖs steps on page 13. However, I am unable to make my Sony W series LCD TV to recognize the transmitted signal.

OS: Windows 7 x64
Remote: MCE v2 model 1039 (both remote and receiver)
Plug-in: latest ver date 9/7/2009
TV: Sony W series LCD

Objective: to transmit signal to switch TV to HDMI source

1. The transmitter test passed with log ÔÇ£3 Transmitters (3 attached), does have learn capability".
2. Test the Sony remote to the receiver and gotten ÔÇ£MceRemote.SIRC12.00E0ÔÇØ consistently.
3. Create new Macro with MCE remote transmitter to learn the ÔÇ£MenuÔÇØ button from Sony remote.
a. The learned code is very inconsistent and different everytime.
4. When I blast the learned code back to MCE receiver, the result is not just one but several ÔÇ£MceRemote.Unknown.<random 7 digit string>ÔÇØ. I repeat the learn process several time until I finally reproduce the same code of ÔÇ£MceRemote.SIRC12.00E0ÔÇØ. However, it is not the only event that got fired, the previous ÔÇ£MceRemote.Unknown.<random 7 digit string>ÔÇØ also occur together.
5. I then test the blaster to the TV but nothing happens. I repeat this process many time without any success.

*note. I notice that even when I cover up the blaster completely with my hand, when I press the ÔÇ£testÔÇØ button the receiver LED still blinks and the same events get logged in EG? I am not sure if this is expected behavior?

FYI, the desire code of MceRemote.SIRC12.00E0 doesn't repro consistently. Below is a sample log. in either case, the blaster is pointed to the TV but TV never react to any of the codes.

Re: New way to get MCE Remote signals in EG (for Vista/Win7)

Post by cgmark »

Some quick info for those having trouble sending or receiving codes. There are a couple different frequencies used to modulate the signal that a remote sends. The most common one is 36khz , others are 38Khz and 40Khz. Inside the receiver there is a sensor that is set to read that one frequency . A device like the IR receiver bundled with windows MCE remotes is set for the frequency of the remote it came with. Using a different remote that uses another frequency will generate false data or no data. The same thing goes for transmitting the data back to control a device. It has to be sent on the same frequency as the original remote for the device you want to control. Sending the data at a different frequency can sometimes be altered in software but receiving at a different frequency almost never.

The other thing is format of the data. The windows MCE remotes use a mix of NEC and RC6 protocols. Data from one remote to the next may look really odd because of the way the different protocols encode the data. Another thing to watch for is some remotes send one code on the first press of a button but a different code on the second press. Things like volume also have a different format sometimes where the remote sends code for the volume button being pressed , then only sends partial code for as long as the button is held down. The best way to record codes is to press a button like a 1 key quickly. The 1 key isn't likely to have a repeat function and pressing it quickly keeps it from being resent.

To give you an idea how fast remote codes can repeat. A remote can send commands at a rate of 10 times in one second.

What happens if you paste the following into the transmit function?

Code: Select all

0000 0067 0000 000d 0060 0019 0030 0018 0030 0018 0030 0018 0018 0018 0018 0019 0018 0018 0030 0018 0030 0018 0018 0018 0018 0019 0018 0018 0018 03f4
I found that code listed for HDMI input of sony televisions at remote central.

@cgmark,
You are mostly correct. The MCE remotes I've tested with have two receivers - the regular receiver and a 2nd wideband/short range receiver used in learn mode. So a capture from the learn mode includes the frequency. I'm not sure if the blaster works at any frequency other than the default, that might be a source of errors if not. As for NEC and RC6 protocols, that is for the windows driver, not the service included with my plugin. My service captures the raw deltas and passes them on to EG to decode. EG understands more than those two protocols. You are right about the variations in transmitted pulses (toggle bits and repeat codes), which makes learning more difficult. My learn function is very simple, and doesn't try to determine any of those variations. It simply passes on what it received.

The receiver I have is based on a cirrus logic USB controller. The remote is the one sold here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product
I really like the remote and for the cost it was worth it. This receiver has only a single IR sensor and the controller so I assumed others were about as simple. Good to know there are some that support a wider range of remotes.

What protocols does event ghost know how to process ? I am interested because I have done a lot of work with IR remotes and have built many dedicated devices for decoding the signals. There is a really nice device for sale that will decode RC5 in hardware but that isn't the feature I like best. It also has a function where you can decode the signal into pulses on a graph. It also can send IR codes . All the code is open source and the device is sold for $20. I made one with parts I already had but it is hard to beat for playing around with IR.

The board is the USBIRtoy.

The site has a lot of cool toys for people that like to play with hardware. I already have the bus pirate device and they have a logic analyzer coming out soon for $40. All their stuff is well built, full source code and best of all cheap in price !

I think the only receivers that have a 2nd detector are the ones that can blast. It doesn't look like yours does.

As for which types of IR EG can decode, there are about a dozen detection algorithms, with the source code in the \eg\Classes\IrDecoder directory.

I don't have time to play with new hardware right now, but I will check out that link when I have a chance. I wrote some code to read RC5 and RC6 hex codes (0x5000/0x5001/0x6000/0x6001) and convert them to pulse timings. I be interested in code for other types, and I'd love to find code that could read ccf files and pull out the IR codes. Know of anything along those lines?

Hi Stottle,

Thanks for your suggestion. I also research and found the code. Unfortunately it doesn't do anything at all. I've also tried a bunch of other codes from that site without any luck.

In all of those tests, when I blast the code back to the MCE receiver it doesn't even picks up any signal at all. Unlike the codes I manually learned via original sony remote.

I try to go thru this entire thread again in hopes to pick up any missing goodies. Then I realize I am not alone in this problem...

But the learn/transmit part still doesn't work for me :(.
I don't know what the problem is, I tried several remotes/devices.

Anyone who has the same problem? And maybe a solution?

Download CCF extractor it will pull out the IR codes of most CCF files.

And for sending IR from just the hex code of the IR and for decoding it as well:
http://arcfn.com/2009/08/multi-protocol ... brary.html

It was written for the arduino platform but the code is so easy to read you can easily port it to something else.
