Windows 7 MCE Remote Workaround not working?

I'm running EG 0.4.1.r1527 on 32-bit Windows 7, with the Windows 7 version of the MCE plugin. From time to time the AlternateMceIrService crashes, as described elsewhere on the forum, so I set the service's recovery options to restart it after 0 minutes if it crashes, as per the workaround described on this forum. (I have also tried 1 minute. Which is better?).
Anyway, that workaround doesn't seem to be enough. The MCE plugin works perfectly for a while, but if, say, I watch a 30 minute show, and then go to use the remote at the end of the show, it won't work, guaranteed. EG is still working - it logs mouse and keyboard events no problem - but it no longer logs MCE remote events, at least not in a timely fashion. Sometimes it will appear to wake itself up, and start logging MCE events after a couple of minutes of trying. Sometimes it will start logging events again after 30 seconds of trying. Sometimes, I have to restart EG to get it logging MCE events again.
The AlternateMceIrService still appears to be working the whole time when the MCE plugin is not logging events. It's not listed as "stopped" in the control panel, and I will have had no pipe not available error message. Then all of a sudden I get a message saying the MCE_Vista pipe is not available, then moments later I get a message saying EG has connected to the Mceir pipe, and that's when the remote starts working again.
So it seems to me, the AlternateMceIrService freezes before it crashes, and I have to wait for it to crash completely, after some undetermined period, before the service recovery feature will restart it.
Is there anything I can do differently, or is that how it is for everyone using the workaround? Is there an way to force the crash/restart when all I have is a remote in my hand? It's ruining what is otherwise an awesome and elegant product in EG.

PS I've tried running the old version of the MCE plugin, turning off UAC and running EG as admin as suggested in many places. But that doesn't seem to work for me. Would I be better off trying to get the old MCE plugin to work, or must I persist with the new plugin and try to figure out how to fix that?
