Some things will work others will not, however you won't have anything from the local session available to the service so there are lots of compromises. You would use something like servany to launch EventGhost as a service, provide it the same login as the session you want it to run under and see if what you want to do still works.
Alternatively you can run your service with a login and have EventGhost run as the same user, similar to a service and both are in the same session which can also be the desktop session. This is how I use EventGhost with the SageTVService. I created an account called multimedia (or not) then had the SageTVService run under that login instead of the system login. I have the machine autologin as multimedia and then a batch file starts all the processes not running as services un that account.
Windows XP Pro sp3 - Several Machines usually latest beta but who knows.
