Noob questions & problems

Post by Kamikuza »

Howdy all!

Finally got around to building an HTPC recently and got a remote for it. It's a generic thing with no drivers and uses a USB RF dongle ... it's got a track ball built into it which I thought was handy.

After trolling through the forums and wiki, I can get SOME of the buttons to show an even in EG log window ... although a lot of the others wont. For example, prev track button shows up but next track wont. Next track works in software like Zoom Player but prev track doesn't. FF and RW keys don't work at all and show no event in the log windows :(

Latest download of EG, Windows XP MCE SP2 IIRC ...

What do I try next?

According to the wife, FF and RW work on DVDs in MCE ... but in nothing else. In MCE when watching .avi, Next and Prev track skip forwards and back ... dude WTF?

Obviously somehow control of the buttons is being nabbed and being made unavailable to EG ... time to attack the registry?

I'm at a loss trying to understand your config. IR signals tend to be all or nothing, either you get no events, or you get all of them (note, by all I mean at least you will get an Unknown event).

What plugin are you using to receive events?

When you do get events, what do they show up as?

Are you getting any Unknown events?

Is the OS handling the events? That is, do you get the same IR responses in MCE, even if EventGhost isn't running?

It's hard to provide help without knowing your setup....

Generic HID and it selects my HOLTEK RF remote.
They usually show up as keyboard commands in the log window, ie the back arrow shows as backspace ... but most buttons don't show anything in EG. They randomly work in some programs.
No unknown events. Buttons like FF & RW just don't do anything.
In regular MCE FF & RW do their jobs, but only when playing a DVD ... in EG they show nothing.

So I know the buttons 'work' but I can't get them to log in EG ... which means I can't use them to program something, can I?

Basically what I want is to program EG so that FF & RW do just that, but in EVERY program I use ... at the moment, buttons either simply do nothing in the software or not what I expect ...

Maybe this topic will help you.
Carefully read it all. I have a feeling, that your remote belongs to the same family.

I would just like to point out that Kamikuza said he has an "RF" remote. As I understand it, this is different from an "IR" remote. I don't know if it makes a difference or not, but I wanted to make sure everyone noticed that. Stottle was talking about the typical behaviour of an "IR" remote, and Pako provided a link to a topic that also seemed to be about "IR" remotes, not "RF".

Attention may be on the spot, but it is not sure.
It is not important whether it is IR or RF. This is just another way of transmission.
Identical but is the connection via USB and also I looked into the receiver of this remote and chip in it is HOLTEK.
