identify a remote

I am not quite sure if this has already been a topic .. all the strings I searched for didn┬┤t return any useful result (correct me if I am wrong).

I bought a mce compatible remote (some cheap 10 USD thing) and it works perfect but I actally want to use a different control
(the one of my onkyo 606 receiver) with the IR Receiver. Sadly nothing happens when I use that one.
So I thought I would program it to MCE but still nothing happens.

Is there a way to identify the "frequency" the remote is using?

Something like a feature asking to press a specific button
- then analysing the code that came from the remote
- then looking in a database for remotes that use this code for this button
- and if more than one remote found asking to press another button and repeat this routine until a unique remote is found.

The MCE remote plugin that comes by default with EG will only recognize MCE IR signals. If you are using Vista/Win7, you can use this other plugin, which let's EG do the IR decoding and will recognize IR codes from other remotes and let EG respond to them. You will have to assign individual codes to macros, there is no database that can be learned with a few button presses (although this wouldn't do much in EG).
