Super-Basic Newbie Question

I have been reading up of EventGhost, Girder, and Intelliremote. I have both a USB-UIRT and a Window Media Center Remote with its own IR receiver. I have tried some of the demos and reading the help files. What is not apparent is if any of the packages does what I need it to do.

1) I have a TV which has on its remote an "Input" selection switch. WHich cycles throught the input devices until I get to the one I want to have. My cable remote controls everything, power, volume, channels, mute, etc. However the "Source" button on my cable remote does not activate the TV's input switching action.

I want to be able to have software that will learn my TV's button programming, and activate it when I press the button on my cable remote. This way I can put my TV remote in a drawer and forget about it.

Can EventGhost be triggered by my cable remote's "Source" button to blast the TV remote's "Input" command?

Right now I am drowning in remotes with the TV, cable, WMC, and DVD remotes. I simply do not have any money left for one of those super remotes like the Pronto... My non-techie wife goes nuts trying to work the whole thing

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I want to use EvenGhost since it is the low cost option.

Yes! And it's super easy too.

Just load the USB-UIRT and MCE plugins, create an input toggle event, configuring MCE to blast the code, then press the cable remote and drag the trigger across to the event. (Of course, you can also use the USB-UIRT to blast if you prefer)

You could also try to find out if there are discrete codes for the TV inputs. Then you could go directly to the input you want without having to cycle through them. Have a look at http://www.remotecentral.com.

I am soooo glad to hear it is doable.... I will be playing with this over Xmas break. I did go to remotecentral; I have a cheap Insignia brand LCD TV and there was not much. Only some type of Pronto .ncf file I could not read. I was hoping to find something since I read that there could be specific commands that separately turn on and turn off the devices. I could setup an alarm to turn devices on and off. But if I simply have the software learn the code, it will not distinguish if the TV is on or off. If I go away, and forget to disable, the TV could be on for days.

Is there anything I can do with the ncf file?

Download and install the ProntoEdit NG software. That lets you open the .ncf-file so you can see if there are any useful codes in the file. If so, you can cut and paste them into EG.
