Pluggin: Clapper

Post by gbruin »

Hello! I'm new to EventGhost when I transitioned my xbmc from xbox to computer last week. I absolutely love the plugable nature of this program. One feature I feel it is lacking is a software clapper. Does anyone know of a plugin that can accomplish this? If not, I'll happily code it up. I'm new to python, so I'll probably rig up a dll in another language (maybe C# a la http://www.pclapper.com). There looks to be enough python+dll examples from the other remote plugins. Does this look like a worthwhile project?

I LOVE PYTHON!

screw messing around with C#, I'm sticking with python. I just finished the band-pass function to strip out non-hand-clap frequencies (< 500Hz or > 2kHz). If anyone's interested in this plugin, check back and I'll try posting the code within the week.

Sounds like a very neat plugin, i'm looking forward to when you post the first version.

Since it's kind of similiar I'd like to point out that there's also been some effort in making a voice commands plugin. I think he's using the Vista/Win7 voice recognition feature so maybe that could also be used to recognize clapping hands? I don't know, it's just a thought.

Btw. Looks like PClapper could also be used as-is to launch "EventGhost.exe -e event", which would trigger an event. But having a plugin in EG that recognizes clapping hands would be much better.

I noticed this when I was half-way done with the pluggin, but from my experiences PClapper misses a lot of claps and gave a lot of false alarms in a noisy environment (both prolly due to my shitty mic). I'm having the clapper control music and I live in a frat house with a lot of bangs and bumps, so I need a robust detection method. Specifically, I'm relying on two techniques, the first which lowers the false alarm rate (1) and the second which keeps it constant at that low value (2):

(1) band pass filter to nix frequencies outside of the ones described in A, B or the article that B is based on.

(2) cell-averaged constant false alarm rate detection

Basically my code's 90% done, (1) and (2) work perfectly, I just have to write the part that counts the number of claps and sends that number to EG

Look at eg.ResettableTimer. It will be the easiest way to count the claps and to use self.TriggerEvent() on timeout.
Please post software-related questions in the forum - PMs will only be answered, if really private, thanks!

It's a neat idea. Do you have any idea yet what kind of resources it will require in terms of cpu % ?

If it is very efficient it might make a nice way to turn speech recognition on and off. As it is, my VoxCommando program has to listen to everything you say in case you say "listen". It's not a huge hit, but it does take up some resources.

would it also be possible to use tones? Whistle a 3 note tune or something?

Did this ever happen? I'd love to try it out. Seems like a fun feature to add to my EG environment.
