New way to get MCE Remote signals in EG (for Vista/Win7)

stottle, thanks for this great plugin. It works very well and it is just what I needed!


Here is one thing I've noticed: I have the AltMCE service set on automatic, and EG set to run at startup. When I boot the computer (Win 7 x64, EG r1387) and login, I get the following in the EG log:

At this point, the service appears to start correctly (no messages from AltMCE in the Windows Event Logs). However, button presses on the MCE do not get sent to EG. I've found I can work around the problem by restarting the AltMCE service. When I do that, EG logs the following:

    MCE_Vista: Connect started
    MCE_Vista: MceIr pipe is not available, app doesn't seem to be running
    Will continue to try to connect to MceIr
    Message = The system cannot find the file specified.
    MCE_Vista: Connected to MceIr pipe, started handling IR event

So, long and short, the connection is not being established properly on startup, but it seems to work properly if I manually tear it down and bring the service back up with EG running.

Is this a known bug? It's not a huge deal, but I wanted to let you know.

another issue is that I when I start xbmc with the remote, the taskbar is visible at the bottom. if I have a window open before I start xbmc then both the taskbar and the window are visible. I then click on xbmc with the mouse to bring it at the front. I tried to addd 'bring window to front" with no success. Let me know what I need to do

Thanks for the great plugin. It does exactly what I needed for my HTPC. The problem for me is, like others, the MCE IR pipe gets disconnected from time to time and the only way to recover is by rebooting as the HTPC user is not an administrator.

I believe this happens essentially after resuming from sleep. Sometimes it's ok, others the pipe just goes unavailable. I've kept my IR receiver in a "dark" place so I don't get a lot of unknown events and this is the only plugin I'm using. Also have installed latest version of EG and I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

I've created a filter in the event viewer for AlternateIRService events. I only get a couple of information entries with the following description:

Status Changed (Quit signal received from namedpipe).

Please let me know if there are any other logs you would like me to send or any other information. I'm keen to help getting this solved, although I'm not a developer...

Have you executed a find window first for XBMC before executing the bring window to front? Also, I usually specify in the find window action to wait 3 seconds for the window to appear. Works well for me with Windows Media Center.

This sounds like it is running correctly, but you want to run additional actions. I don't use xbmc, so I would suggest you create a separate thread topic to get some of the xbmc users to suggest solutions.

Thanks Brett. In the meanwhile, the workaround I have found is to configure the AlternateMCEIRService to restart automatically if the service crashes. This way the service starts working again without intervention. Not ideal but will do for the moment.

Anyway, happy to work with you to debug what's going on.

I think it did it - I had the find window but with no wait - because of the crashes I'll need some time to confirm but I'm optimistic

I wonder if the issue is tied to these unknown remote events (see below). The receiver of my remote is very sensitive and sends events even if I don't press any button.

That long unknown event sure seems to be the culprit. As a workaround, try to keep your receiver away from your tv and keep it in a dark corner. Mine is quite sensitive too I've put it in a corner behind my speakers. I've found that even without line of sight the receiver works well with my Harmony One remote and I get a lot less unknown events. It will still crash from time to time, but less often. As suggested before, try to set the service to automatically restart if it crashes. You can do this in the recovery tab when you check the service properties in Administrative Tools/Services.

Just a workaround but I can live with it until Brett can pick this up.

I wonder if the issue is tied to these unknown remote events (see below). The receiver of my remote is very sensitive and sends events even if I don't press any button.

another issue is that I when I start xbmc with the remote, the taskbar is visible at the bottom. if I have a window open before I start xbmc then both the taskbar and the window are visible. I then click on xbmc with the mouse to bring it at the front. I tried to addd 'bring window to front" with no success. Let me know what I need to do

This sounds like it is running correctly, but you want to run additional actions. I don't use xbmc, so I would suggest you create a separate thread topic to get some of the xbmc users to suggest solutions.

I've set the service to restart automatically as suggested and have had no more issue.

I've been happily using EG for a couple of years now and absolutely love it, but have recently hit a snag. I tried going through a large portion of these 297 posts and, among other things, I've gathered that an XP receiver may not work with this currently. I don't believe my Matrix Orbital Typhoon GX falls into that category, so I'm stuck as to why EG won't recognize any commands. I have EG working perfectly with my USB-UIRT, but now want to use the one built into the Typhoon. I can control programs with the remote via the HID side, so I know the receiver is working. The EG log doesn't show any issues when starting up and the service is installed and running, yet the log never registers any commands from the remote.

When I start up EventGhost, the log shows:

Is there something horrible about running EG as administrator in order to use the default plugin?

I have to run it as administrator anyway just to get it to save in Win 7.
