Windows 7 (64 Bit) & MCE

Post by wtf »

Hi,

I am using EG since a year or so and upgraded from Vista to W7 after release. Everything worked until I decided to renew one HTPC. New Hardware, clean install. Installed EG, loaded config, disabled HID, reboot. But .. EG did not work. It was "intercepting" but did not show any events, I believe it was "0.3.7.r1387" (or maybe one version earlier)

So I read the forum and gave the alternate MCE stuff a try. Didn't work either. Same situation: Signals where not received by the system anymore (e.g. Num-Keys), IR-Led was flashing, no events in EG. After testing around for an hour it suddenly worked after I used my "old" EG Version "EventGhost_0.3.7.r1262_Setup.exe". I was happy getting it running again so, didn't care anymore.

Today I reinstalled another htpc. Clean W7 64Bit, no junk at all (besids Cool&Quiet and ATI drivers). Windows Update, reboot, installed recent EG "0.3.7.r1462". Same effect. I activate "Disable HID" and neither Windows nor EG receive an event. I deactivate it and IR works again (outside EG).

Time for some facts:
IR: Philips SRM 5100
OS: Window 7 64 (ger)
UAC: Off, user is admin
Eventlog:

Code: Select all

<Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event">
- <System>
  <Provider Name="AlternateMceIrService" />
  <EventID Qualifiers="49154">1</EventID>
  <Level>2</Level>
  <Task>0</Task>
  <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords>
  <TimeCreated SystemTime="2010-04-03T14:40:37.000000000Z" />
  <EventRecordID>733</EventRecordID>
  <Channel>Application</Channel>
  <Computer>mediasheep</Computer>
  <Security />
  </System>
- <EventData>
  <Data>AlternateMceIrService</Data>
  <Data>FAILED to open MCE IR Device (searched all devices in MceIrOpenUsbDevice) failed with (259) Es sind keine Daten mehr verf├╝gbar.</Data>
  </EventData>
  </Event>
Device: "eHome-Infrarotempfänger (USBCIR)" (using MS default drivers)
USB\VID_0471&PID_060D&REV_0101

EG Log (alternateMCE):

Code: Select all

16:40:33   ---> Willkommen beim EventGhost <---
16:40:33   Autostart
16:40:33      Plugin: Microsoft MCE Remote - Vista/Win7
(just no indication at all)
That said, to me it looks like there has been a change since r1262 that breaks somehow with W7. What makes it kind of hard-to-reproduce is that upgrading worked for me. I had newer Versions than 1262 runnig - but always installed 1262 first.
Imho thats something about a timeout or localization?! .. but just my two cents.

Any PRO thoughts or advise?

Did you reboot the machine after installing the MCE or Alternate MCE (Vista/Win7) plugins? Installation will update the registry so IR events aren't processed by the OS, but the driver will still be attached in the background (which keeps the plugin from attaching) until a reboot.
<Data>FAILED to open MCE IR Device (searched all devices in MceIrOpenUsbDevice)...<\Data>
This indicates that the Win7 plugin can't attach to the device - which can happen if the OS is already attached.

Yes. Actually I did quite excessiv rebooting to test things.

Those are thrown after reboot. I cleared the Eventlog & rebootet to check whether some other Warnings/Errors happen. However that's the only notable event (which is logged nine times).
Any chance by debugging that? I am interessted in helping a bit, fallback to the older version is not quite future-proof.

Thanks for your help so far.

Did you use HID with you previous setup?

I'm asking because of this comment:
I activate "Disable HID" and neither Windows nor EG receive an event. I deactivate it and IR works again (outside EG).
That, and the fact that the MCE_Vista plugin didn't find your device makes me wonder if it is a HID device and not an MCE device at all. While a lot of devices are called MCE remotes, there's a particular GUID assigned to MCE devices that require the special handling. You can get the same functionality with HID, and many devices do.

Could be that the MCE plugins are working because your device doesn't use the MCE GUID.

I also know there have been changes to the HID processing in recent versions of EG.

While I can't say this is the problem, but that is where I would look next. Can you try the a clean install of the older EG (without using an old config file) and see if you see events from the HID plugin?

Maybe I dont understand that 100% (: ..but well:

1) I installed 1262 (with a config not knowing about any MCE plugin). Added MCE, "Disable HID" and rebooted. EG looks like this:
1262.png
Result: Num-Key 1 is detected and not forwarded to Windows, great.

2) Uninstalled 1262, installed 1462 (unfortunatly using the same config as before).
Result: Num-Key 1 is deteced but forwarded to Windows.

3) Uninstalled 1462, reinstalled 1462 (now with a config knowing nothing about any MCE plugin again). Added MCE, Disable HID, reboot.
EG looks like this:
1462.png
Result: Num-Key 1 is deteced but forwarded to Windows.

Point (3) is remarkable as that did not happen before. Result before 1262 was installed once:
a) [x] Disable HID: Num-Key 1 not detected by EG/Windows but IR-Recv led is indicating transmission
b) [ ] Disable HID: Num-Key 1 not detected by EG but usually handled by Windows.

Just for fun I installed Alternate MCE Win Vista/7 now (and rebooted..) and, ta-da, same result as (3):
Num-Key 1 is deteced but forwarded to Windows.
...in opposite to what happend before:
Num-Key 1 not detected by EG but usually handled by Windows.

Thats all very strange. I would understand if you say that this is a rather specific error caused by my IR - and remains unfixable. I thought it would be a standard MCE-something remote but honestly I am not very into that.

A difference I noticed between 1262 and later versions is that 1262 sometimes locks the Window-Start-Button. "Locks" means, you can click it, but the menu won't show. Maybe that in no way related... however ..just fyi.

Ignore my HID comments from the previous post. I forgot that the original MCE plugin had the selection called "Disable HID service...". My mistake, I understand a bit better now. Also, if the MCE_Vista plugin is able to produce events, it is detecting your receiver as an MCE receiver.

Can you run another test for me? In the configuration where you get MCE events in the EG log, can you exit EventGhost and open Notepad.exe (or any text editor). With the editor having focus and EG not running, what happens when you hit Num1?

I'm guessing the answer is that the OS will add a "1" to the document, but I'd like to make sure.

Another thing to try - can you take a look at the registry keys in the following post (old post, just look at the registry keys listed) and try deleting "CodeSetNum" keys (there are several) from ALL of the keys, then reboot? I think that might fix the problem.

Sure, sorry I idled a while, here's your test:

1) Using a old (working) 1262: Neither while EG runs (EG gets the mce.num1) nor after it is closed Windows (notepad) receives the '1'.
2) Recent 1462: While EG runs & while its closed Notepad receives the '1'

Which post? (:
I assume something like http://www.eventghost.org/forum/viewtop ... 9782#p9782so:
On a old (working) 1262 (1):
745a17a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57da - not has CodeSetNum0-3
745a17a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57dc - has CodeSetNum0-3

On a recent 1462 (2):
(same keys / values)
745a17a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57da - not has CodeSetNum0-3
745a17a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57dc - has CodeSetNum0-3
After deleting CodeSetNum's from *57dc & reboot: Notepad does not receive any '1', no matter if EG runs or not. EG however receives the Events => success.

Still a difference as you do not need to remove keys with 1262 .. but who cares.. I wonder what would happen with all the originally noted "Device not found until 1262 was once installed" stuff if I do that on a fresh W7.
Maybe using the existing config & removing the CodeSets will do the trick. Let me know if you need further information about the IR device.

I'll post here If I feel like reinstalling again and can test on a clean W7 (:

I had to register here just to say, i had the exact same problem, been screwing around with it for days un till i finally found this. Did the same thing as in the last post and finally i can use my remote!

I have the same remote and everything.

Looks like like something maybe the dev's can fix later.

Just to clarify the deleting the 745a17a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57dc - CodeSetNum0-3 fixed it for the same remote on my win7 32bit system.

THANKS!
