Best IR device for EventGhost

Hi Guys,

I've got a Speedlink SL-6399 remote which I've had for a while. However now I'm seriously starting to get into this automation stuff I want to replace my speedlink remote with one that will generate real HID events. From what i've seen on the net and this forum is that the SL-6399 is quite convoluted and really is only good for sending keyboard commands (whcih is how i've previously been using it with eg).

The problem now is that I want to stop EG from responding to keyboard events as they are conflicting with my actual keyboard usage and since there does nto appear to be a way to reassign the keypresses the remote sends this remote has started to become useless and annoying to me.

What I need is somethng that will be compatible with my harmony remote and will send EG something it can detect as a non-keyboard event. Possibly a HID event or something. My budget is about £40 (~$60-80). I also have a Bluetooth PS3 remote which was perfect but it is not compatible with my Harmony remote and so must be consigned to eBay. I had considered buying the PS3 Harmony adapter (http://is.gd/cgMAv) but I cannot find anywhere which says it is PC compatible. Does anyone have any experience in using this device?

Well, I have been planning that my next IR/automation transceiver will be network attached, such as the Keene IR over IP. I tried to sum it up a bit for you:

The good:
+ The device receiving/transmitting the IR signals is standalone, so you won't need a computer that's turned on and driving the receiver
+ No locally installed drivers. Not only it will be easy to work with but also means you can use the receiver in the future as well, as it wont become useless because of missing drivers for your particular OS. (maybe when you want to move to the next version of windows?)
+ You can hook up a "server" type eventghost installation located physically anywhere in your house that is responsible for doing various things that should always work. Such as sending WakeOnLan events (most reliable way of waking up computers) or turning lights on/off etc.
+ Should be extendable.. Just get another network enabled device and there you go.

The bad:
- The network attached devices will cost more than most USB based setups.
- You obviously need to have network infrastructure in place (ethernet cabling, switches..)

It will be overkill for just one PC, but if you want to do more than that then it's worth considering. That's what I'm planning to do with my home automation / HTPC setup in the near future.

I have both the USB-UIRT and the KeeneIR's

Both are good but the KeeneIR's network connection is very nice since you can put it anywhere in your house where you have a network connection. I haven't tried it but I believe it would also be possible to connect them wireless using standard stuff

USB-UIRT supports pronto codes which I find very important. The KeeneIR's actually does that too but the current plugin for EG is not supporting this. I have myself an updated version where I added this since long and it is working perfectly. I haven't heard anything from the original author for long time and if there is an interest for it I will upload my version to the plugin forum

If networking USB devices is the only issue to solve, I have very good experience in using this product.
