OSD not showing when running Media Center

Post by sirmadman »

Hi!

I'm having trouble getting the OSD to show on top of Media Center when running MC in full screen.

EG version 0.3.7.r1462
Windows Vista x64 and Windows 7 x32

On one machine (Vista) I run with two monitors and set MC to full screen on monitor 2.
I do this by using MCE MulitMon in order to keep the mouse pointer on monitor 1 and not lock it to MC.
In this case OSD works.

The problem is when running MC "true" full screen.
This sometimes happen on the Vista machine if I press the "Green" button and MC itself controls the full screen.
On my Windows 7 machine which I run as a pure HTPC directly to a TV (one monitor only) I never get OSD to show on top of MC.
It only shows if I'm showing the desktop or another player.

Can this problem be fixed somehow?
I guess it has to do with some graphics mode which MC uses. Maybe a collision with Aero?

I made a simple "Sleep" macro by using OSD which I really want to have working on my MC machines.

I use the Microsoft MCE Remote plugin without disabling HID. But that shouldn't matter for this problem...

fullscreen mode was primarily developed for games, but is used for video applications as well (and MCE). My understanding is that it tells the GPU that it can ignore everything except the video from one application. That way the application gets the optimal performance. So I'm not surprised it doesn't work.

There may be a workaround, but it would probably involve new coding in the OSD. I'm really not sure.

Maybe the best solution is to write a plugin for MC which communicates with EG?
Not the easiest solution, but certainly the best looking.

The plugins available today doesn't do exactly what I want and it's a bit tricky to connect them to a button on the remote.

Looks like I have to find another way to solve this, as I don't feel like reprogram the OSD plugin.

The OSD plugin creates a partially transparent window that is in front all other windws with always-on-top propery set. My guess is that MCE full screen mode either prevents other windows from being updated at all (like stottle said) or maybe the MCE also makes sure it's video window the topmost one so that would make the osd appear behind it (and thus, hidden).

Anyway, as suggested you will get best results if you can find an MCE plugin that can draw in MCE's video overlay rather than bring a separate window on top of it. Even if you could see the EG's OSD text often you get an undesirable flicker in it because of the video overlay it's being drawn over.

Sorry I can't help more with MCE though, as I don't use it myself..
