I figured it out.

Is the UDP port selection box on action item settings dialog for the broacaster plugin new?

Disregard my previous posts. It boils down to that UDP port selection box not being set.

I'm still struggling to follow.

I don't know who is listenting to whom or how events are being generated. Is broadcaster sending events to another machine that is listening, and if so is it listening using eventghost's broadcast plugin or something else?

I'm sure what you are writing makes perfect sense to you because you already know the big picture. explain to me, as if I was a child.

maybe I have just had too much beer...

would it help, if you could use a different delimiter when sending from the one used when receiving? Currently it sends and receives using the same delimiter as defined in the plugin settings.

I freely admit that I can be quite dense when trying to understand people, unless they are very specific.

yes the send port is new so that you can talk to multiple machines (or different programs on the same machine) without having to use multiple versions of the plugin, but you should be able to use '0' and it will default to the port that you are listening on - unless I screwed up...

further confused I guess, because we were composing posts at the same time.

is everything ok now then?

Yes I had to set the port on all my udp broadcast commands.

Plugin Broadcaster is now also in the SVN repository.
Once Bitmonster (or maybe Bartman) creates a new installation file, the Broadcaster plugin will be included.
Meanwhile you can download from this address.
Before commit, I did a few cosmetic changes, such as line number 81.

I know this is an old thread but I'm pretty confused on how to get the Broadcaster plugin working with EG. I am trying to send a UDP message from my control system to Broadcaster but it isn't seeing any of the messages.

What format do the text strings need to come in as for the plugin to recognize them? Right now I'm just trying to see something show up in the log so I need I am sending the strings correctly. I'll then work on trying to get them to control things with my PC.

Thank you.

I think any string should work. You need to check that you are sending on the same port that EG is listening on (default 33333) and that your firewall is not blocking you.

before you pull your hair out changing your app, see if this will work first:

When I try to open your udpsender app it immediately crashes. I'm using Win 7.

Is there a way I can use this on a difference computer on the network? I'm able to send the UDP signal from the same PC that EG is running on and Broadcaster sees it, but I want to be able to try running it from a different computer to confirm that the UDP message can be received across the network. I imagine I would need to be able to put in the ip address of the EG computer somewhere.

Thank you for the help.

You just run it from anywhere on your lan. the whole point of udp is that it does a general broadcast. it does not target a particular ip adress, so any and all computers that are listening to the correct port will hear the message. if you have tried it from another machine and it is not working, then maybe there is a problem with your network, or your firewall is blocking you.

if you want to talk to your pc from outside your lan then you need to use tcp instead of udp.

Ok, I figured out what the issue was. I thought the Broadcast Zone should be set as the Subnet Mask. When I put it back to what I believe the default was (255.255.255.255?) I can send UDP signals from my other computers. I still am working on the control system side but at least recognizing UDP over the network is a good first step.

Can you confirm that the Broadcast Zone should be left as 255.255.255.255. Thanks.

Sorry for all the posts. Hopefully it will help somebody else in the future.

I figured something else out which was making this very hard to troubleshoot. Whenever EG goes IDLE it stops receiving UDP commands from my second computer. I need to wake it up and send a UDP command from the EG computer to make it ready to accept commands from the second computer. Then once it goes IDLE again it ignores the commands. Is there a setting that I am missing that doesn't wake up EG from UDP commands? I'm guessing there is an activity timeout somewhere but I don't even know if I should be looking for something on the EG side or if it is on my PC that is ignoring the UDP command after a certain length of time.
