Eventghost, Windows 7, and my MCE Remote won't play nice

I am using the latest version of EG. 0.3.7.r1462. I have scoured Google and unless I am missing something, I just can't seem to get my devices to cooperate. I recently upgraded to Windows 7. Previously I was running Vista. I used a SIIG Vista MCE remote to control XBMC. I setup the remote just fine with that setup and it worked for about a year. The only hiccup I ever had is that after my system came out of standby, the remote and EG would lose sync or something and I would have to restart EG and everything would be working again.

Now, that I have Win 7, the results are a lot more disappointing. After installing EG, sometimes it receives command from my remote, sometimes it doesn't. More recently I have found that if I uninstall the MCE plugin in EG and then re-install it and save the config, the remote will work and I can see the commands in the left pane and all of that good stuff. However, if the computer is restarted, EG is no longer responsive and things are no longer working as they were before the restart. I'll restart EG and still, nothing. The only thing that works is to uninstall the plugin and reinstall it again, and then it works again.....until a restart or standy/hibernate.

I've tried what seems like everything. I've tried turning off the HID service in Win 7. I of course checked the box to disable the service when installing the plugin. I've tried the Alternate Service by stottle I believe it was. That didn't solve the problem. I think I've tried a few other things, but I can't remember them all. Is there anything else that I could do? I tried not to be that guy that asks the question thats already been answered, but I can't seem to find any answers.

If I'm just SOL with this remote....is there one that I should buy that a good number of people have had success with in Windows 7 and XBMC?

Yes. Initially it did. But after I installed EventGhost and checked the box to "Disable HID for this device" after installing the MCE plugin it hasn't worked with MCE since then. But I think that was suppose to happen...correct?

If you disable HID you are correct.

I sounds like you have some software conflicts causing your problem with EG. If EG works once, and then not again later, that means EG works fine. You need to isolate the conflict and remove it. Start EG without anything else running and then start up one app at a time.

I'm really not sure what it could be. This is a fresh Windows 7 install. The only thing I really have on this system is Google Chrome. Are there any programs that are known to cause conflicts with EG?

I'm finally at my wits end. I've come to the conclusion that its just not going to work for multiple reasons. For one thing, the only time EG will accept commands from the remote is if its in Admin mode. I tell it to start up as an admin in the properties of the .exe file and it doesn't start at boot because UAC blocks it. I have to start it manually. I disable UAC and it works fine.

Then I'm plagued my another problem. For some reason after standby the receiver is no longer able to receive a signal from the remote. I have to unplug the receiver from the usb port, plug it back in, then restart EG. Ridiculous.

Is there ANY other remote setup I could use? I just need a remote to work with XBMC.

Interesting. I'd seen that mentioned in some threads while trying to troubleshoot my current problem. Before you made the switch, were you having similar problems to mine? I ask because I don't know if the finicky nature of the IR receiver is due to it being cheap....which it was, or due to Windows 7. I never had this problem on Vista. I am planning on buying a Harmony remote here soon so I wanted to get my IR situation worked out so that when I got the Harmony, all I woul dhave to do is program it.

I ran across an application last night. I'm not at home so I can't look and see what the name of it is. Its pretty cool though because after coming back from standby it automatically resets my usb devices. So where my IR device would not turn back on before after standby, it now does thanks to that software. It would still be nice though not to have to have such software. If that usb-uirt works better than the current receiver I have then that would be great.

I wish I was able to figure out why EG needs to be in admin for it to recognize commands, but I can live with restarting it after startup and after standby.

Needing admin is because the original plugin was written for XP, before UAC etc.. In Vista/Win7 you need admin privileges to even connect to the device. That's the advantage of my other plugin.

Personally, I would use the plugin meant to work on Vista/Win7. If that isn't working for some reason (it works for a lot of people), you could post some details to try to get that sorted.

I asked because at the time....I didn't know. But obviously I've been troubleshooting this for a while. So at some point, reading various thread, I got a handle on it. It's not like you replied a few minutes after I posted that. Pump your brakes. I'm not berating your work. Just simply said that the plugin didn't work for me. It's software....I'm sure some people have had success with it.....just as well, I'd bet there have been others that it hasn't worked for. It happens.

I really don't know what details I could give at this point. I stated it was a fresh Windows 7 install and I gave the brand of controller I'm using. I also mentioned that I'm not running anything on the computer at the moment mainly because it is a fresh install and I've just been trying to get the remote control situation settled.

Try the following:

Delete the MceRemote plugin (the XP version) from you EG configuration. Then install the MceRemote_Vista version. During the install, click the "install" button to install the service as well. If it is already installed, you will get a message to that effect, otherwise it will install/start the service. Reboot your machine. Once restarted, create a macro and include the MceRemote_Vista's "Get Mce IR device capability" action. Run that action and post the log.
