Hello,

The ping plugin doesn't work very well ... although I have used it for several months, there is some problems :
- the first release of the plugin uses the os ping command (the ping.exe that probably lives in your windows directory). It's not really efficient. If you ping often a lot of devices, your cpu load will be really high.
- the second version of the plugin implements a pure python ping. Unfortunately, enhanced security in recent windows (vista,7) will prevent it from working. This is because, by default, windows doesn't allow applications to implement raw sockets. This can be corrected either by modifying something i don't remember in the registry, or by running eg with admin rights. But even if you solve this problem, the plugin makes eg sluggish when to many devices are watched... probably because there is some sort of hang when the sockets wait the echo. Unfortunately, I have no experience with python, thus, I am not able to solve the problem.

recently I decided to reimplement the functionnality with c#/.net. Now it works great without any issue. Unfortunately, the code is really ugly, and a lot of things are hard coded, so it's not really ready for public download. I wish i had more time to clean it and post it here ... who knows, perhaps one day !

If you really need to get events when an host become available or dead on your network. If you don't poll it to often, and don't manage more than 2 or 3 hosts, I would recommand you to use the first release of my plugin.

Feel free to PM me if you need more specific help.
