Known Problem (!?) with Vista and MCE Remote Plugin

Windows Vista SP1

I ran EG as adminstrator user; First error: X Unable to establish COM dispatch!

Then, I try to add the MCR Remote Plugin with HID disabled.

Vista tells me that I need to be logged on as Administrator! I am!!

I don't want to mess around with a "Beta Windows service" or Python code.
I would like to try to control Vlc Media Player with my MCE Remote.

Are there any plans to release a version of EventGhost with an MCR Remote plugin that actually works (out of the box) with Vista/Win7?

(Nobody seems to have asked this question for sometime)

Thanks... BUT

I don't want to have to be logged on as Administrator in order to watch videos.

I don't actually know what UAC is, nor whether it is safe to switch it off. (The security improvements in Vista are NOT something that I want to circumvent)

Question: If I were to do as suggested, does EventGhost restore things, HID thingy in particular, to how they were, when I exit the application? I want to be able to use the Remote with Media Center sometimes, as well.

The MceRemote_Vista plugin was built specifically to overcome the limitations of the old plugin on Vista/Win7. If you don't want to "bother" with that, then you are left with the limitations - namely running as administrator and turning off User Account Control (UAC). That's just the way it is - forward complaints to Microsoft, as there isn't anything EG can do about it.

As for restoring, neither the old plugin nor the _Vista plugin do that, simply because a restart of the PC is required to change whether the OS or EG connect to the device. However, there is an MCE plugin which can send events from EG to MCE.

Thanks for your patience! I misunderstood the status of the MceRemote_Vista plugin.
I have since downloaded the most recent version, MceRemote_Vista_20090907.zip, and am trying it.

Do I still have to be logged on as Administrator in order to use this _Vista plugin in EventGhost?

When you run the _Vista plugin, it will give you a config screen that lets you install the service. It will prompt for approval to install and ask for admin password if you aren't running as an administrator. So the answer is no you don't need to run as administrator, but you need to be able to provide admin credentials to install (one-time only).

clarification about what is needed to have to old mce plugin working under vista/7 :
- You don't need to be logged as administrator. You just need to have eg running with full admin rights.
- You don't need to disable UAC.

A simple solution to have eg automatically starts with windows and with admin rights is to create a schedulled task into windows. you set the task to run at startup and to start eg with admin right (there is a check box for that).
