Best RF Remote to Use with EG? - Help needed
To start off, EG is probably one of the most versatile/useful automation applications I have come across. I'm still learning about new things I can do almost everyday. So my question summed up is: What is the best rf PC remote with EG?
I have searched google and found remotes such as the Snapstream Firefly (which is pretty old) and Harmony remotes, but I need advice on which remote is the newest and is most compatible with EG.
I have a few things I am looking for:
- Needs to be RF (not IR) - would like the remote to work in other surrounding rooms close by
- Needs to come with PC receiver - I don't currently have a RF receiver (I do have an x10 CM15A though, but I don't think it can receiver RF signals besides the ones for X10 RF commands)
- Universal Remote type - a remote that looks like an actual TV remote, preferably a remote that can actually be used with tv/dvd if needed
- Mouse - preferably with a mouse trackpad/touchpad/directional pad
So basically a RF remote that incorporates all of the previously stated features (or as many matching features as possible). So far, the Snapstream Firefly seems to come closest, but it is rather old and I was curious to see which remotes would work better. So which PC remotes/receivers would be most recommended?

Hi Steven,
there's a similar thread further down, you'll find some remotes there.
Again, I suggest the ATI Remote Wonder, it's a very versatile remote. And also very unknown and cheap.
"I've been using the ATI Remote Wonder for years, even in pre-Eventghost-times with Girder.
It has loooots of buttons and even mouse controls.
You'll only find it on ebay in limited numbers, but it's reasonable cheap and works great.

I think it works for all your needs except the "Universal Remote type" - you'ld need a remote with RF and Infrafred for this - I guess, thats pretty rare. And Expensive.
Regards,
pint

Take the PS3 BD Remote it's the best !
Older models lacks Vol+/- ch+/- buttons, but there are enough buttons on the remote to map this functions to unused buttons.
Newer models have volulme buttons but they only send IR (can't be used with BT).
Older used models are really cheap (15-20Ôé¼ shipped) + you probably already have a bluetooth dongle.

Is there any other RF remote you guys can recommand besides the ati wonder, i'm tired of Ir remotes i have to invest in RF now
Re: Best RF Remote to Use with EG? - Help needed
Looks like all the ATI Wonder Remote versions are RF.
Do these work with EG's existing Firefly plugin?
What are the usable RF range on these?
thx for the input.

Re: Best RF Remote to Use with EG? - Help needed
I got the ATI Remote Wonder Plus... I have yet to be able to get it working with EG beyond the first button press.
EG, I have mapped the ATI button to launching XBMC and that works fine... but after that, it does not work... EG will not "see" any of the button presses.
I have installed the EG X10 plugin (set to ATI remote) and installed the ATI Remote Wonder app & driver from the ATI site.
Can someone that has it working please outline what OS apps/drivers they have installed to make the remote work, and what EG plugin/config they are using?
thx!

I hope you guys don't mind me bumping this thread.
Similar to Livin, EG is having trouble receiving subsequent button presses on IR remote unless I wait for about a second. So I cannot hit up/up/up/up in movie list or file list, I have to hit UP, wait a second, UP, twoonethousand, Up threeonethousand..
EG has no problems receiving sequential signals from MCE remote, or exact remote that is sending MCE signals (learned from MCE remote).
I just wanted to check if it has something to do with with IR receiver drivers (it is using MS eHome drivers as default)

Re: Best RF Remote to Use with EG? - Help needed
MartyMc,
My problem was not as I thought... I inadvertently had both EG and the ATI software running at the same time... thus, they were both receiving the RF signal and acting on it. Once I stopped either one, it worked fine.
Your issues is likely that the built-in eHome driver is working and so it the EG driver. Do a search on the forum, there are threads talking about this from way back. Also, if you need to, please open a new thread on it so this thread keeps on topic and you can get the help you need.

I don't understand how can the PS3 BD remote work with a PC as it's sold without a usb RF receiver.

You need a USB Bluetooth PC Adapter. This is the one I use in Windows 7 and it works good.

I also use a Bluetooth mouse with the adapter. Good range.

I am not married to it but I use an X10 Snapstream Firefly.
Have bought 3 over the years. Work great with EG once you get the right driver.
I also sometimes use X10 PC interface and old Firecracker. But X10 soft/hardware often kinda sucks. Works mostly but sucks.

So i have finally bought a PS3 BD remote (i think that's the first model, it's lacking the volume buttons , but that's easily tweakable) with a bluetooth adapter made my Belkin (model: mini bluetooth V4.0 adapter) and it's working like a charm with eventghost on win7 x64
I can tell you i feel the difference compared with an Infra red remote/sensor:
- no aiming at the sensor (that only is worth the money)
- easy press (no forced "double press")
- all buttons on the remote are recognized
For a grand total of 27Ôé¼ (the remote was a second hand, in good shape), i feel like in heaven right now
Word to the wise
