RF Remote

Anyone using an RF remote with Event Ghost? If so, I'd love to know which one and how it works for you.

Yep. I'm using the Snapstream Firefly. Getting it working was a little tricky if you experience the same problems, but do a search and you'll find the solution

Snapstream Firefly is the ticket, I use the driver's only download from snapstream and the Generic X-10 plugin in EventGhost, it's preconfigured for the Firefly.

You may also look into the Gyration remotes, they function as a mouse and rf remote. One of them does rf and ir so you can control your ir devices too. They use the generic hid plug in. It's worth considering.

I have one of those too but I have the older airmouse/keyboard, these are definately the choice if you want mouse functionality. However they are more limited in buttons available, the Firefly is more handy IMHO for a remote, it too does have mouse capability but the learning curve on useing a 4 way directional pad is much steeper. The Firefly has boatload of buttons that are extremely handy like mouse/L Click/R Click/Maximize buttons plus 4 buttons marked ABCD that you can do as you wish with. Those extra buttons make integrating your system very easy.

For true bliss though you want both the Gyration keyboard & airmouse and a Firefly for remote control duty.


OP Don't be fooled by Gyration knockoffs, if you want one and don't have the $ get a used Gyration brand unit before you get any other solution.

Question on rf remotes (in general)...

I have several remotes that operate multiple different devices, bed, fan, lights... How do I integrate them with eventGhost?

They are not ir or x10, they just have their own remote that is not line of site and (like most rf) - works great through walls and at a distance.

I'd like to be able to setup e.g. to control them somehow.

The biggest one is my bedroom ceiling fan as it's also the room light.

I think that may be difficult. You need to know the protocol used by your devices and find equipment that can receive this AND is supported by Eventghost.
I have a RFXcom transceiver that supports a large range of devices, botheid reading and sending. Check compatibility at rfxcom.com for your device.

I did something similar once as a home project - I don't know if it helps you, but I think It doesn't harm to share my experience

The good thing about these deticated 3rd party remotes is, that they usually have just a few buttons, so I bought a ethernet interfaced IO board (e.g. raspberry pi would be good for this purpose) and connected the buttons of the remote to the outputs of the IO board (with optical coupler in between).

Now I can tell eventghost to turn on a specific output on my IO board for some milliseconds and this triggers the wired button on the 3rd party remote.

It's obvious that I wasn't able to use the remote like before from that day on, but I don't care since I can control Eventghost from everywhere via smartphone.
