Having to buy a hub [vera] is kind of disappointing. It is an extra expense and installation.
so if I choose a product like this, what would I be able to do with it without having a hub?:

I was actually wrong. Event ghost "start application" can open URL shortcuts and email file extension [*.eml]. You're right. No need for batch files.

No. You need a Z-wave controller in order to operate a Z-wave device.

They're very reasonably priced, (about about a 1/5 of the price of a lock, where I am), and someone in your position could really get some use out of Z-Wave enabled gear. I know I do. Have you heard of voxcommando? I haven't tried it, and unfortunately it's not free any more, but it seems a bit like Dragon, but geared more towards running things, rather than 'just typing', if you know what I mean. Dragon is pretty shitty for anything but dictation, as I'm sure you've discovered.
