How to Ping my Nexus 6

Hello,

I own a Nexus 6 and i use an app called Tasker. Im having some trouble's "staying connected to my home wifi" im wondering if i can ping my Nexus from EventGhost to try to keep it at home. Also...Will this constant ping drain my battery

Any help would be greatly appreciated

the ping plugin should work for ya

it should be a built in plugin for eventghost. i think, if it's not there then i can dig it up for ya.

you have to change the wifi connection settings on your phone and enter all the connection gobbly gook so it's all static

or you have to go into your router and set it so it issues the same IP address everytime to your phone

the latter of the 2 is going to require the MAC address of the wifi card inside your phone. you can find that in the settings/about section of the phone.

Thanks for replying.. I did find the Ping plugin. Thanks for offering to dig it up. ("You have to change the

is ment by this. I can log-in to my Comcast router with no issuses..
I'm new to EG so could you Please help me get this set up. If you would like I can provide my e-mail, hangouts,
or anything that you prefer, Here is fine too.. Im very eager to learn.

What that means is you have to go into the wifi on your phone and on the connection to your network you should have a settings option.

Most times you will then have to click advanced

In there turn off DHCP and enter the addresses manually


Most common would be like this

IP address: 192.168.1.100
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS1: 192.168.1.1
DNS2; 8.8.8.8

Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0


Now I know that Comcast routers by default use a 10. Address scheme

So it is best to look at your current connection and see what it has set it to

You need to have a static IP address for the device in order for the ping to work

To know with android phones every time you boot the phone it generates a new name for its self so that is not going to work for ya

Not sure about iPhones

Instead of doing that on the phone you can also log into the router and set a "static" ip address there I use the term static meaning perminant very loosely because it is still dynamic however the router will reserve and only issue that number for your phone

You need to use the MAC address from the phone to set that option up

The IP address of my Nexus is 10.0.0.11 .... I reboot my Nexus and The IP address of my Nexus is 10.0.0.11
If i see this in the LOG is my Nexus actually being "pinged?" and is it working correctly?

it is pinging it, but again if you do not set a static IP address for the phone it can change.

so expect that.

and google uses host names that aren't the same each time the phone boots.

your router is issuing the same IP address based on the mac address because the leases run for 8 days and after 4 your phone will ask to renew for another 8 days.

that being great and all and you would thing it would be the same forever.

but if you have to reboot the modem or the power goes out it can change.

that would be a good test for ya. press the reset button on the back and see if you get a different IP. make sure you turn the WiFi off on your phone first then reset the thing and wait until it's fully up then connect the phone and see if the address is the same do not rely on the ping program to tell you because the router could issie that address to something different.

but if you are ok with having to change the ping program if something changes, then that's fine also

but yes, it is always pinging that IP address you gave it.

that's how it knows if you are there or not. it's just running in the background.

if you bring up the task manager (left ctrl + left shift + escape) and then click on the processes tab. in that list you will find a process labeled "TCP/IP Ping Command (32 bit)"

but you defines the milliseconds between each ping. and the number of successful or failed ping before it will fire an event.

in the case of using it for a keep alive.

you really shouldn't need one for more than every minute or so.

but what i would do is to do one every second and have it set so it's 10 failed before it fires the event.

now cool thing is you can have it fire the event, use the e-mail plugin to send a SMS to your phone and then something like tasker to see the text and restart the WiFi

but being that you are using the Comcast router as WiFi. depending on what model you have (check the label on the bottom) if it's an Aeries they have HUGE WiFi problems.

I would call Comcast and demand the xb3 modem that one is made by Cisco and the WiFi has almost no issues (and i haven't rebooted the modem in over 6 months). and my speeds jumped from about 70mbps to over 200mbps with the new modem. put it to ya thins way, 8 minutes or so to download 2 GIG, down to about 2 and a half

i had horrible disconnect problems with the Aeries and i don't think the ping will solve the problem. especially with the nexus, because that phone is always talking to network for something

i am almost willing to bet you have an Aeries modem. and if you have that modem with the x1 cable. OoOo buddy you have got to be having some issues with your cable boxes, i am the person that found the issue with their boxes loosing communication with their servers. and it was that same modem causing the problem

that same modem also doesn't work properly with Macintosh devices because the QOS is all messed up on it. and with the Cisco modem you can shut off the Xfinity broadcast of the free WiFi from your modem

just a little background because the nexus shouldn't be getting disconnected from an idle timer problem. also check the WiFi settings on your phone because I know there is a setting that will turn off the WiFi if the phone is sleeping, then when you wake it it will reconnect. make sure that's not set that way.

just some information of things you should check because you shouldn't need the ping utility

and you will get a heap of benefits with this new one. i think you get 2.4ghz and 5ghz WiFi and i also think you get wireless n. bet the best part is you can turn off that stupid xfinity broadcasting WiFi from your modem.

it's a service they give for free to comcast customers, meaning you can connect to a comcast hotspot from your cell or laptop for free. but what they don't tell you is that your modem and every other comcast customers modems are what is broadcasting the WiFi.

now that would be fine and dandy, and they claim it doesn't hurt your speeds.. but that's bullshit it may not affect your bandwidth (speeds) in that manner, but the simple truth is the more people connected to a router the more information it has to route and more address in the route table, there for the hardware will slow down, and in turn slowing down your effective connection speed.

not because of bandwidth but because of the limitations of the hardware

i went round and round with them about the problems of the aeries modem and the modem locking up under heavy use and wifi problems, and it all went really bad once i got that x1 rebooting cable boxes 8 or more times a day and they would take at minimum 6 minutes to reboot, and then it wouldn't remember where i was in a movie.

but for the x1 boxes to work they have to talk to one another and wifi is to slow, so they have to be connected together with a cable.

and there is only one cable that connects them all together the cable wire. and there are other things on that wire..

the modem.

and under heave use of the internet is when the boxes would go really screwy.

i just put 2 and 2 together, and it took me forever to get someone to finally do something about it. and when we did we found a bunch of things, like for best optimum performance the modem should not be behind more than one spliter.

i would check the gray box on the side of your house (you own it so go ahead and bust it open, you will never see them come and collect all the wiring and what not from the side of your house if you stop your service)

if you have more than 3 device connected to the wire in the home. example, 2 tv's and 1 modem) they have to split a spliter. and if the modem is on the 2nd splitter your speeds will drop almost 50%. so it's in your best interest to check that.

and i'll bet you have never had such an easy conversation with them before.

I Just hooked up my Cisco router this am (Monday). Busy weekend. When i first setup this Cisco router Comcast did not see it online? ... I ended up calling them and we got it working... I do like the fact that it has 2.4 and 5Ghz. My Nexus will connect to both networks just fine. However.. My wife's phone only connects to the 2.4Ghz I'm not sure if her phone (LG G Vista) has the capability to connect to 5Ghz)
I googled how to turn of the wifi hotspot. I think i did it correctly (log into xfinity account.. / user preferences / choose option B disable wifi hotspot ?)

No i never such a easy conversation ..LOL

I noticed my WIFI lights on the router were now blinking (Arris they were not blinking yesterday) I mentioned this to the Comcast tech ... his response was ... Those wifi lights ...
They are suppose to blink ... Thats your device talking to the router. Watch this .. your TEL1 light is solid on the router i said yes ..he then said turn on a phone and it will start blinking. I thanked him for
teaching me that !! Who knows how long my wifi light on my Arris router was not functioning correctly ...

well that's not really right, because you set the static IP to the actual WiFi connection so that is the only one that is static. if you connect to a different network you are back to DHCP

and as I did say before this is not the route I would take, it is the easier of the 2 to do.


tho, all of this is moot at this point, because the original topic of the thread was ping my phone so my WiFi doesn't disconnect (keep alive)

thing is since the change of the cable modem i would honestly be shocked if it continues to drop, if it does it's one of 3 things

first is that there is a setting in the android WiFi that will disconnect the phone when the phone goes to sleep to conserve battery, that setting has to be set to off if there are to be no disconnects

second thing if that there is something not right with the WiFi on the phone

third and this one is a kicker. there was a mention of xfinity voice. weeing how there is now 2.4ghz and 5.0ghz there and the phone supports 5.0 this shouldn't be a problem anymore. but if it's on the 2.4 and there is a 2.4ghz cordless phone in the home and said base for the phone happens to be sitting next to the router (very very common) POOF!!! phone rings you make a phone call.. no more WiFi.

and OH plasma TV's love to reek havoc on WiFi


but if all goes right there will be no need to ping the phone there for no need to set the IP static or even have DHCP always issue the same IP address.

unless there is some other need??

I tried finding a complete manual for the router, with no success only a partial, and my setup i have the router in bridged mode with a separate access point for WiFi and a separate VPN router. and it's not easy for me to get to the back of the modem and move wires around so i would be able to access the setup menu again.

Ok... I've had devices that behave differently... set it to static, and it was always static, it did not remember it per network... But yes, in that case it would be the same.
