A quick update... Things got hectic here...
I keep running into issues with MediaPortal (it just freezes the pc, nothing in logs), and am quite happy with NextPVR for the recording. So I will use the following combination:
- NextPVR: pvr back-end
- Kodi for playback of videos: it is the only player I can control from eventghost that supports wasapi, madvr and possibly edl.
NextPVR is very stable, but cannot always play back its own recordings (codecs are ok - trying to get a sample to send to the developer). So I resorted to MPC-HC and no nice interface. But I want better playback features. So I've decided to only use kodi as a browser for files and as the videoplayer (maybe later also photos). I disabled all plugins I could disable, and also disabled all menu entries I do not need. It seems quite ok like this. This weekend I may actually have some time to finally integrate it all: loxone interface to control kodi/pc/amplifier (via eventghost), squeezebox (with eventghost xap data) and maybe even start on playing with controlling the lights from within eventghost (simple http commands would allow for this).

does your computer suspend it's self?
is your tv tuner a USB tuner?
do you have the latest drivers installed for your tv tuner?
are you trying to record when this freeze occurs?
what codecs are you using in mediaportal? (TV and video use different codecs so make sure you check)

Well, I'm happy with my current setup, so I won't pursue the issue further for now. But I'll answer the question as it is strange...

no, pcie (Compro e900f)

yes

are you trying to record when this freeze occurs?

no

the same ones as I use in NextPVR where there are no freezes

The freeze of the PC occurs at random, even when just showing the user interface and not playing back anything and even sometimes when not having played back anything. PC is about 2 years old, Intel z97 chipset, all latetst official drivers (no beta) installed.

The freeze only happens when MediaPortal is running, which makes me suspect that one.

It is getting quite busy here (I may be moving abroad in the next few months), so I will just go with the solution that seems to work.

it has to do with the tuner and mediaportal. and if you tried it again you would find that it does it after you wake the machine up from sleeping.

there is a setting in mediaportal to have the server portion of mediaportal wait for a little bit before initializing the tuner i don't remember exactly where it is because i have my tuner unplugged at the moment.

but just in case you decide to try it again there is a solution for the problem.

Nope... it also did it after a reboot, and also when the tuner was not initialized at startup but manually prior to lauching MediaPortal.
For sure it is possible to find what is causing it, but I don't have the energy/need to locate it. I removed MediaPortal and its components, renabled the NextPVR components (I disabled those to avoid conflicts) and now the system is not freezing anymore. I would also suspect something with the tuner, but given that the functionality I need is rather limited (nice 5-foot file browsing interface with option to play back files, preferably using wasapi, madvr and edl, and controllable from EG), I choose the easy way out now.

i'm a problem solver. and the harder it is the more i dig into it. it's what i like doing. so sorry about seeming like i am trying to push mediaportal. i just like fixing broken things.

I know: I'm the same. If it should work, I should be able to make it work. But not this time... NextPVR is fully configured and behaves nicely, Kodi suffices for playback and offers some features not well supported by MediaPortal, so I just don't want to pursue solving a problem with a program I don't intend to use.

heyyyyy no worries. i am sure sometime in my travels through the information superhighway i will come across someone with the same problem really wanting to fix it.
