What do you mean with "generic diy serial ir receiver"?
If you mean the LIRC-kind of devices, you find the answer in the list of supported devices.

Thanks I read through the wiki but didnt look under that part about the lirc type to get that info. So you have something working but not so stable or it has flaws if i understand correct ? the reason i ask is i would only wanna use it for about 2 commands for video switching the yamaha receiver and it isnt done very often so it may be suitable.

You can try to use WinLIRC in combination with the EventGhost LIRC plugin.
