Ikea coming with a new automation system for lights.

Post by eirik226 »

IKEA is launching a new automation system for lights - as of now it's available in a few selected countries but they will expand in 2017 to the rest of EU.

As far as I can tell it uses Zigbee based (ZLL) and there are some reports of the bulbs working with the Philips Hue system before the latest firmware update (see e.g. YouTube). Right now, the system consists of E27, E14 and GU10 Bulbs that all have dimming and a few preset temperatures, as well as a remote and LED panels for the BESTÅ and METOD cupboard doors. An app is reported to be arriving in April.

Here is the product on the Swedish IKEA page:

I know we have a lot of Swedish users and some from the United States, the product should be for sale there.

This is very exciting news! I hope they work with the Hue Bridge (and my plugin for the Hue Bridge). If its only stand alone its not very usable, but if it could be integrated into centrally controlled systems it would be great. Cheaper lightbulbs! :)

Zigbee based is very good news, doesn't guarantee that it works with any other zigbee stuff but with a bit of hacking it will.

Too bad I've already automated my entire house using z-wave, otherwise I'd definitely try this.

It is usually a good idea to have 2 protocols running in a HA setup. Because there are usually devices made for one and not the other. Or if it is its 3 times more money. I bought a security sensor for the iris. And a while back the iris was zwave. But I guess they do both zwave and ZigBee so the sensor I bought was ZigBee. And the same sensor in zwave is over 2 times more loot
