Hey all,
I want to use EventGhost with my Keyspan receiver - it's one of these:

I hacked it to use my Tivo remote to control Vista Media Center, using codes and conversion software I found on the web eons ago from LIRC. Anyway, it works. The software is a bit dodgy, but it works.
Now, I'd like to launch the new Hulu player, and then do some other fancy stuff, and found EventGhost

I can't get EventGhost to recognize any of the remote's commands. The Keyspan works by receiving commands from the remote, and then sending keypresses (or mouse events, etc..) to a specific application (or the currently active application). I loaded the "Keyboard" plugin, and associated "1" with launch Hulu Desktop, and it works with the Keyboard, but not the remote.
The remote doesn't generate ANY events in the log. I don't get it - anyone? I'd hate to get a USB-UIRT just for this, but maybe it's time. Are there any CHEAP receivers that can learn 38 KHz remote signals?

MCE remotes/receivers are pretty cheap. But you may be able to get EG to work with the one you've got. EG comes with quite a few remote plugins, maybe one of the other ones will work? Or writing your own plugin is possible if you can figure out what the usb is outputting (haven't tried that before, I have no idea how hard it would be). If you can find out more about what the receiver is outputting, you may be able to find a different plugin that at least outputs events to the log....

Well, the main problem is getting any receiver to understand the Tivo codes - they're not easy to find & translate, and getting them to even WORK with the Keyspan receiver was a bit of a miracle.
I took the Tivo (and NAD - for TV power/volume/Mute) from here:

Installed the Keyspan software, that always just kinda-sorta-worked, and told it which keypresses were equal to which remote button in Vista MCE. It works. Kinda. But it apparently doesn't send keyboard commands and bypasses that somehow.
EventGhost would really be nice in force-quitting MCE, say, when it hangs, and things like that. But if it's not getting the.. er.. event, I suppose I'm a tad hosed. Not sure how I'd get any other supported receiver (the MCE receiver is pretty much non-trainable, non-universal, etc.. at least the one I had wasn't. Hmm.. )
Will EventGhost send out the info from whatever remote it receives, or does it just understand what the MCE driver receives?

The answer to your question isn't straightforward, as there are several tasks that need to be accomplished. First of all, the IR receiver needs to be connected to the computer in some manner (USB in your case). There needs to be a driver that interprets the info along that connection into something EG can process - i.e., IR codes. The 2nd process is to convert IR codes into messages or actions (for instance, a "spacebar" keypress.
The confusion is that some drivers combine both of those functions, where the MCE remote (by default) is an example - MS loads registry keys that translate codes to messages and don't output the IR codes at all. My understanding is that the MCE plugin removes those registry keys so that EG can work with MCE codes.
With that in mind, the main problem you have is finding a way to get the codes sent to your receiver into EG, which takes a plugin. Luckily there are already a bunch of EG remote plugins - including a lirc one. Try adding a plugin to your autostart folder and select the remotes->lirc plugin. If all goes well, once that is installed you will start seeing your IR codes in EG (they may show up as hex (0x????) values). If so, you can either create a modified plugin that translates the codes, or use the raw hex codes to trigger whatever actions you want.
I doubt converting to the keyspan converter will be necessary at all.

Also, I'm not using LIRC, I'm just using the converter to go from the LIRC codes to Keyspan compatible format. And actually, I tried doing that again, and it didn't work for some reason - completely different (incompatible) codes were generated, so I just stuck with my old stuff. It's nice to be able to recreate work, though.
There's another option - the Nero LiquidTV receiver/remote combo - if there was a way to get those codes into EventGhost, I'd be home free, but whatever I read doesn't make me feel like it's doable (like, it's not an HID device, doesn't work with MCE, etc..)

I don't have an MCE remote, but I am fairly sure that its receiver can accept commands from other remotes. I've got the USB-UIRT which will accept almost any commands, I have a vague recollection that MCE doesn't have the same frequency range? Not sure, but I think it will work pretty well. I'm not sure I understand. If you try LIRC and EG posts codes - even Unknown ones - you should be able to get it to work. And you shouldn't need to get Keyspan involved.
