some help please with usb-ir receiver, beyond tv and harmony
some help please with usb-ir receiver, beyond tv and harmony
hello all,
i have a harmony 880, with snapstream and a generic usb-ir receiver that i ordered http://www.buyextras.com/syusbirad.html
I have been using a logitech wireless keyboard to control beyond tv but i would like to use the harmony now. The keyboard is RF based so i cant have the 880 learn its codes.
Can someone tell me what i have to do to get the harmony to control my beyond tv program? I just need it to do some basic commands i've been using the keyboard for: up/down left/right keys, space bar, +/- for volume and a few other keys.
can someone tell me how i do this please? I've downloaded and installed event ghost but thats about as far as i got.
thanks

The Firefly will work. For the "Firefly mini" I'm not sure. I have no true confirmation till now.
Another good alternative would be an USB-UIRT, so you can use your Harmony.

Just looked at the Firefly Mini product page. The Mini will currently NOT work. It's not an X10 remote. Someday it might work, if an HID plugin is written for EG.

actually, looks like the firefly wont work because it seems that uses RF? and the 880 is IR only (the 890 does IF and RF). I want to use just the one remote. So i'm really only looking for the cheapest way I can get an IR receiver that will work with the 880 and allow me to control beyond tv.
The uirt is a bit more then i'd want to pay, especially since it looks like i could pick up a used firefly mini remote (or some other remote) that comes with an ir receiver that event ghost can work with.
Although from what you said, event ghost may not work with the IR receiver that the firefly mini comes with.
Do you know of the cheapest IR receiver i could get that would let me use the 880 remote with event ghost?
thank you for your help

heh...damn. so it looks like i would be limited to the streamzap then? since thats IR and its listed as one EG supports.Bitmonster wrote:Just looked at the Firefly Mini product page. The Mini will currently NOT work. It's not an X10 remote. Someday it might work, if an HID plugin is written for EG.
if i can find an IR-USb receiver thats X10 compatible, that should also work with EG?
thanks again

1. The Streamzap receiver will work together with the Streamzap remote very good. As an universal receivers it is not so good. If you can learn the codes from the Streamzap remote, it should work. The same applies to the MCE remote (Logitech might have a ready to use profile for MCE remote codes).
2. Actually I have never seen an IR X10 receiver. They are all RF based.

just looked on the 880 site and they do have an entry for the streamzap. And the 880 is supposed to be able to learn commands if its not already in their database.Bitmonster wrote:1. But if i understand EG correctly, i could make up my own commands? I would just point the remote at the IR receiver, click the button on the remote and then map a command to that remote click? I dont really need anything super fancy. It just needs to be able to do the 4 cursor keys, enter, spacebar, and a few other single key presses.
Thanks once again for your help in explaining this.

Yes, I also believe, the Harmony could replace the Hauppauge remote, as Logitech collects nearly every code from other remotes. But this won't help, since you want to use the receiver and therfor need one, that is supported by the software you want to use. And EG currently doesn't support them.merk wrote:hmm, i emailed hauppauge and they 'think' the harmony could replace the hauppauge remote. I think maybe though i will just go with the streamzap since i've already made enough mistakes in assuming certain things would work.
thanks

I have splitted a part from this topic to a new topic, because some posts were more related to the Firefly mini. These posts can now be found here:
