Endless loop

Post by bahgheera »

Hi there. I've been battling this problem for months now. I've searched the forum and the web but haven't come up with an answer that works yet. So here is the problem: I have eventghost set to watch a directory. When a new file is placed in the directory, eventghost runs therenamer, which renames the file and moves it to a new directory. Now, up until this point, the problem has been that after the file is moved, thumbs.db is updated in that directory which causes eventghost to trigger again and run therenamer, which either a) times out and updates thumbs.db which starts the whole cycle off again, or b) just hangs because it doesn't know what to do with an empty directory. After a couple months of sporadic efforts to resolve the problem, I finally turned off thumbnail caching, so the thumbs.db file is no longer an issue.

Now here's where it gets extremely annoying. Now that I've solved that, eventghost has responded by repeatedly triggering off of a file once it has already been moved. After therenamer moved the file, evenghost STILL shows in the log that directory watcher sees that file has been updated and is endlessly looping while running therenamer. Even though the file doesn't exist in that location anymore. What am I to do? I am so close to having this working seamlessly, but there is always one little thing that is stopping me from achieving my goal here. Enraged is what I am feeling right now, to be frank. If anyone has an idea what is going on here, I would very much appreciate hearing it.

Thanks.

I've never used Directory Watcher so I'm not sure what you are seeing. This article looks like they are using it without issue. You might want to reach out to this person...http://lifehacker.com/5475649/set-up-a- ... dia-center

of course, let us know what the fix is :)

Thanks livin, that's precisely the article on lifehacker that got me started on this about a year ago. I have gone back to that article time and time again to make sure I didn't miss anything, to no avail. Now that second link you posted looks interesting, I may be able to go somewhere with that. It didn't occur to me to write a python script to check the file extension. I may be able to do this. Thanks!
