Basic Guidance on MCE IR Receiver with Vista

I've been pouring over the MCEIR threads for a few days, and have tried a number of things, but I have lacked success and remain confused about how I should proceed.

I simply want to see my mce remote button pushes registering or logging in one of the applications lik hip, girder or eventghost.

I am running vista (32 bit). My mce remote works fine with MCE using its default driver.

I see for a while people used a replacement driver for the MCE remote receiver, but more recently that was pronounced absolete, as some registry changes were discovered which allow the MCE remote to function as needed using its default driver.

I have two questions. 1) If I am running vista, should I still follow the instructions for the vista replacement driver, or make the same XP (or different) registry modifications for vista?

2) (forgive my ignorance here) to get one of the above mentioned apps to log my remote button pushes, (assuming i've made either the needed driver or registry changes) do I also need a mceir.dll file? IF so, do I need a file specific to the given app mentioned above, if so is it expected that one .dll file will work with all these apps, or does each app require a mceir.dll written just for it?

Assuimg I do those two things correct, is there any thing else i must do to expect to see my remote button pushes being logged.

I have a 2nd IR receiver connected to the same PC (for standard keyboard and mouse), is that (or any other devices) expected to cause issues?

So, what is the best way to use the Microsoft remote in Vista 32bit?
IR Server (from MediaPortal) now can use the standard MS driver, can EventGhost do it, too?

i'm posting my findings on windows XP (since they seem related to this question).

i couldn't get EG to see my MCE remote events either, yet MCE works fine.

The ehtray.exe (c:\windows\ehome\ehtray.exe) program is responsible for handling the MCE remote events. If it is running, it receives them first, handles them and does not send them on to EG. After i killed ehtray.exe, all the MCE remote events were successfully logged in EG. ehtray.exe is started at boot time via the Run section of the registry.

This leads me to my primary question, how can i have ehtray and EG co-exist and share MCE remote key presses or implement a 'toggle button' that allows exclusive use of one or the other.
